Xanthoconium affine

A friend gave me these for a closer look. They seem to match Xanthoconium affine (= Boletus affinus). I think, one step further would include following A. H. Smith and tagging them with var. maculosus -- for whatever that is worth.

Hmm, the texture of the cap is cool looking. Was it velvety?
What did you use to ID these?

Mine do all the time!
You need to talk about mushrooms more so they remember to bring them to you.

Very slightly velvety, more apparent with a hand lens. In terms of methodology, all the basic stuff -- including macro-chemical (I have a video of this that I might stick on youtube later). They are a relatively distinct mushroom. In terms of resources I used A. H. Smith's Boletes of Michigan and Kuo's web page. This is not my first encounter with the species so it was more or less IDed upon sight but I did double check characters... last year I used Bessette, Roody, and Bessette in addition to the above mentioned sources.

The friend who gifted them is always willing to push off mushrooms, she is responsible for collecting an IDing probably around 50% of the recorded taxa in the state of Kansas and has sort of been my mycological mentor so to speak. The day she gave me these guys I was forced to say no to several other as she wanted to push a full basket off and I just don't have the free time to work on them... so I picked the prettiest mushrooms, including the Amanita I posted a few days ago (think I posted it anyway).
We are probably going out tomorrow to hike a magical reserve that has been under the stewardship of Kansas University for the past 45 years and essentially untouched since the early 1900s with the objective of finding Leccinum murinaceo-stipitatum (rat-on-a-stipe?).

I forgot about that... didn't CureCat use her power as a moderator to mandate that at least 10% of all member content in the hunting forum need be slug-related or bans would be issued?.... better work on our quotas.
I don't know much about slugs, what is the vent-like opening on the side of the creature's body? Is it used for breathing?
