Venus fly trap question (pictures...finally)
    #10687524 - 07/16/09 11:20 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Does anyone have any experience with venus fly traps?  If so, how do you keep humidity up while allowing them to have an open area for flies to come in so they can eat.  Just got a beautiful looking one today, it's almost ready to flower, and I'd hate to keep it confined to the little chamber it came in.  Any tips?

They really dont need the humidity to be as high as it is in the cup it comes in.

You can put the pot into another pot, and fill the other pot with distilled water.

You'll want to cut off the flowers, unless you want seeds, because they arent showy and sap energy from the plant.

Dont water with tap water, respect the plants winter dormancy requirements and it can live a long time.

I had one on a windowsill with nothing for humidity (no pot below either) and it did fine (this is in southern california)

A good bood on carnivorous plants is The Savage Garden by Peter D'Amato.

good luck! CPs are very cool and interesting plants.

Aww... don't cut off the flowers. I always really liked them. They're not like orchid-showy or anything, but they're still pretty and worth see-ing if you haven't before.  As far as raising them goes, put them in an undraining (or barely draining) pot full of pure hydrated sphagnum peat-moss, and make sure it stays continually moist with rain/distilled water.  To hydrate peat-moss, soak it in warm/near boiling water. If you use cold water, it'll take all day.

Cool, thanks for all the info.  I definitely wanna at least see what the flowers look like, I had no idea they produced them.  The only reason I thought it needed to stay in the container was because the container said they needed at least 50% rh, and the container could aid in that.  But if you say you've had success without, I'll give it a go.  Thanks again.

You might want to slowly expose it to less humid conditions. If you do it all at once, the tender leaves could suffer.

As for the flowers, I think I left mine on the first time too

you will find there are many ways to be successful, wether it be growing plants or mushrooms....

good luck!
and post some pics

Just put it around a window with diffuse light, I think somehow the flies get attracted to it, I had one in the past and I was so proud when she killed something.

Some people say you should cut the flower because it takes off a lot of energy of the plant but I've already seen them survive the flowering.

This plant should be kept undernuted otherwise it won't eat flies.

Yea, I thought that was cool, it said you don't need to feed it because it gets all the nutrients it needs from flies.  I can't wait to see them in action.   I wonder if they eat mosquitos....

I'll definitely try to get some pictures up soon, they're pretty crazy looking.

Yeah, just DON'T feed it. It feeds itself. Maybe leave it on your kitchen, where flies can be attracted by foodstuff and then become a victim. :hehehe:

They can be acclimated to a non-humid environment? I ordered the book last week, The Savage Garden, but dont own any carnivorous plants. Theyre too interesting to ignore however. Id love to have a bunch of them potted up on my porch.

But the way you guys make it sound, they can be acclimated to a non-humid environment just like a Salvia Divinorum plant. Is this accurate? That'd be great.

Yes, carnivorous plants can be acclimated to drier conditions depending on the type.  I've got some nepenthes that have been without any humidity chamber for a while now indoors and I know sarracenias as well as cobra lillies will do well outdoors given the right care.

Very interesting. I definitely have a renewed interest in cultivating these. The book should be here Monday. Thanks for the info.

The book Savage Garden is great. The guy who wrote it is a weirdo, really into his plants..... not like anybody here, right?

any subject can be fascinating if you get far enough into it and when somebody is heavily into a topic, they can make it come alive.
although sometimes you can open the floodgates..

when people ask me about plants or mushrooms I have found I always have to ask the follow-up question, "Well, how much do you really want to know?"

About the same with me, I can and do grow both plants and mushrooms with a passion. I love 'different' plants. (but I guess that term is relative to your geographic location)

Your post makes me think youd enjoy a book im reading, "Teaming With Microbes". Its all about the soil food web. It covers all the relationships between bacteria/fungi and works its way up the chain to protozoa, nematodes, arthropods, worms, gastropods, mammals etc. I've read all of that, now im getting into the second half of the book, which relates to practical application.

I think you'd really like it, excellent read. VERY informative.

I'll also have to be ordering some carnivore plants as soon as im settled in my new place. Some of them are really... alien looking. Definitely cool.
