Picking everything after flush?
    #10667799 - 07/13/09 08:28 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

The first flush has ended on my trays each giving me a little over half an oz dry.  My question now though is these trays pinned with over a hundred pins.  Not all grew to maturity.  About a quarter became full grown mushrooms so I'm left with 75 pins the size of a pin head popping out.  Nearly impossible to grip and remove from the tray.  Should I just leave them on and dunk the trays? will they grow now that the large mushrooms are gone?

or should i crack out the tweezers and start picking away? thanks.

they might be pins for the second flush, they might be aborts. I would dunk it and find out. if they rot after the dunk get them off your tray.

There certainly are pins for the second flush- leave those. Pick anything that is obviously an abort, but if you can't tell- leave it too.

thanks guys.  I've been experimenting a lot with the south american strain.  Doing casings and uncased with wax paper right now trying to see what I do best at.  Largest fruit so far was about 7 inches tall but that tray had less pins.  basically like i said scoring half oz's of the shoebox trays every first flush.

Some of the 'aborts' will start growing on later flushes.  If the cap darkens, stem gets skinny and fuzzes over, it's a true abort, and is beginning to rot.  Go ahead and get it out of there.

You ever seen that movie Constantine.  Well they pass into hell several times.  In hell there are melting human bodies, in your tub are melting mushroom bodies.  Your tub had passed into mushroom hell.

Aborts will never start to grow.  Dormant pins will.  Pick the aborts with black heads when you pick a flush.  If the pins are the normal color, they're just dormant and waiting for their turn to grow.
