A few quick monotub questions

First time trying the monotub. Theres a few things I wasn't clear on...
1. When crumbling my grain substrate to spawn in the coir is there any specific technique to use, or just make sure its spread out evenly?
2. Is there any foreseeable problem using a super hot knife to cut out the holes instead of drill?
3. Garbage bag or tin foil at the bottom? Does it matter?
4. I ordered a bale of coir online, anyone know how a bale compares to a brick in size?
5. Whats the best type of light to use for fruiting?
Thanks!!

Just mix it in the best you can. Save alittle substrate to cover any exposed grains. you dont want to see any grains on the top when you are done.
2. Is there any foreseeable problem using a super hot knife to cut out the holes instead of drill?
no dont get burned from dripping plastic maybe.
3. Garbage bag or tin foil at the bottom? Does it matter?
I like tin foil since it sticks to and shrinks with the substrate better. most people recommend black trash bags though since foil can be reflective and myc is known to eat through foil(though it is fine for 2-3 flushes I dump my tubs after that anyway).
4. I ordered a bale of coir online, anyone know how a bale compares to a brick in size?
no clue
5. Whats the best type of light to use for fruiting?
blue florescent
Thanks!!

I just alcohol my hands and arms good and mix up into the coir. Then cover for 2 weeks with a trash bag.

1) break up the grain in the jar first.
4) A brick is around 22 ounces.
5) Daylight. Or 6500k CFL is popular too.

Break up up with like a sterilized knife or something? Is this just to help keep contams out?
And Lacma its not like a hay bale! Its probably 12x12 inches or so and it says to add 5 gallons of water to it, but doesn't say how much it weighs.

"3. Garbage bag or tin foil at the bottom? Does it matter?"
The practice of lining a monotub with a garbage bag is so bogus. It doesn't work. The purpose of it is to stick to the substrate to prevent side pinning but it doesn't. And it's a bitch to deal with when dunking.

Agrees with /\/\/\/\
As for the answer to that question of plastic being necessary Mycelium will not eat threw plastic,It will however eat threw aluminum.

whatever you say guys. As I wrote before, the best and only real reason to line a tub with a garbage bag is to prevent pooling water under the subsrate. For this the bag must be positioned inward so condensation can roll down the walls behind the bag, avoiding the sub completely.
I still believe that the liner does little to nothing to prevent side-pinning. It didn't for me and many other 'credible' users have reported the same thing. I'm willing to be convinced otherwise but only by someone who knows their shit.

I'll agree with Dudester. I hate the hassle of the garbage bags and I see no reason to use them. Side-pinning can be addressed another way if you're worried about it - get some black spray paint and coat the bottom of the tub with it before use or surround the bottom of the tub in black gorilla tape. And pooling water should really only be an issue if you've got too much moisture in the tub and thus can be easily avoided.
I stopped using garbage bags and things have been going great. In my opinion, garbage bags are pointless.

As you can clearly see,The plastic is Pulling Away From The Side's Of The Tub.
The first tub i ever did was with out plastic, It side pinned like a son of a gun. Since I have been lining with Plastic Not-a one

Painting the side will Only block out the light from the sides, If I use overhead lights I am going to end up with side pinning when the sub pulls away from the walls, I have a bin right now as we speak doing it. This is what i have seen in my work,All others may have different results.

I agree, but at that point is side-pinning really a problem? Once the substrate pulls away from the walls of the tub, I am definitely okay with side-pinning because there is plenty of room for the pins to form on the sides and eventually happily find their way up towards the surface as they mature.

I never said there was a problem my friend, I was just stating that when done properly, A garbage bag will halt side pinning better then anything that i know of, That's why most of your Veteran's at least the ones that i read from still use garbage bags, plastic, visqueen.

as I said aluminum foil works great it sticks right to the sub so there is no room for pins.

You are correct, If you do a search for aluminum with the user name road kill, You will see that mycelium eats right threw the aluminum pan let alone foil. If you do not want side pinning and or your sub sitting in water,Your best bet is plastic. When my pan gets done I will update this thread with a pic of what mycelium will do to aluminum.
If you take a look at my avatar you will see a cake in a bowl. I did an experiment with that cake, I left it in standing water the whole time, As you can see it turned out fine.

thats exactly why I said at the begining of the thread most people advise against aluminum. For this purpose though I think it works better than plastic. I am not relying on it to contain the sub just stick to it and stop pinning. It does that well and for 2-3 flushes the myc burning through it isnt a big issue.
