 How bad is alcohol for you?

I am planning on joining a fraternity in college for next year. Just to give a perspective, people there are really heavy drinkers in my opinion, usually drinking at least 2-3 times per week (and that may be considered very low for many of them). There is at least one party a week, usually 2, so I will prolly be drinking heavily at least twice a week. I just wanted to know how bad is alcohol for your mental abilities in school and your physical well-being. Because I am concerned about what consequences this will have on my body in the long-run. People at the frats will always say they get shit done, but that is not convincing enough to me...

id be a lot more worried about smoking too much pot than drinking too much
drinking isnt THAT great...and you don't have to drink so heavily.
besides just drinking 2-3 times a week at night isn't really going to effect your school performance
blazing ganja all day long *most likely* would tho

It's really fun in the beginning then as your body wears on for a couple of months you notice it isn't as fun as it use to be. Besides your going to be going up in weight and the liver damage. Better to take in moderation and enjoy the rest your college has to offer.

I think it really depends on how bad your hangovers are. I've known plenty of frat brothers that have blown off tests or didn't turn in assignments in time or missed classes cause they had their heads in the toilet.
Use a dash of personal responsibility with a bit of restraint and make sure that you can keep your shit straight.
As for your personal health, it can be pretty detrimental. I'm not even going to sugar coat that a bit. The key is recognizing when it's starting to harm you and taking steps to limit or counteract the damage.

I drink very scarcely. Same goes with just about anything. I find very little redeeming value in the consumption of alcohol.

just 8 - 10 oz of "hard" alcohol on an empty stomach can lead to you doing some really really stupid shit.
I have had some awful awful hangovers that, while I have never actually done it, could maybe compare to coming down from something like opiates.
edit: God, it is one of the best buzzes tho.

Opiates don't have much of a comedown at all. Unless you are physically addicted and suffer from withdrawals.

in the four years of college, alcohol can hurt you more in terms of how much you end up fucking your grades up and your ability to graduate/get into a grad school than in your health. in most cases, at least. it can also kill you if you let it
also, alcohol is known to lead to pregnancy and std contraction. if you let it
alcohol in moderation (and i mean moderation) is actually a great thing. alcohol in excess is brain damage, organ damage (with the liver most prone but NOT the sole victim) and the atrocities of death or manslaughter if you start driving. dui if you're lucky. also, alcohol can lead your fellow college buddies to know you for some pretty stupid antics, if you let it.
again, alcohol in moderation is great. getting drunk is great too, but in moderation.
getting absolutely shitfaced is real bad though. think of it this way: if every time you took mushrooms you woke up with the same kind of hangover as you do after your most drunken nights, dont you think mushrooms would be 100000x more demonized?
alcohol has the ability to make you throw up bile, remain in bed and feel completely shitty and nauseous for most of the day after a night of drinking. if any of our other recreation drugs did that (weed, mushrooms, lsd etc) we would all be pissing ourselves over how bad they are.
Its just that alcohol is such an an accepted and readily available thing that we dont put 2 and 2 together. when you wake up after a night of drinking feeling like a blimp is trying to fit into your head, you are feeling the aftermath of an extremely damaging intoxication.

if you do end up joining and plan to attend all their parties, make sure to schedule your classes late in the day. that's what always killed me. even if i wouldn't drink so much last year, i'd end up staying awake until 2-4am several times a week and missing my 8am. i'd set my alarms and everything, promise myself i'd get up, then roll out of bed at 11 and find that i'd turned off everything in my sleep

no one really cares that much about a hang over. you only get hella bad ones if you are a stupid frat boy that a) cant hold his booze & b.) doesnt know when to stop.

I drink sometimes when I am around some girls. It kills plus I can't get a hard on when I'm drunk lol  .

How bad is drinking? I almost died and was recesatated 2 months ago. That day was the first time I drank in 6 months and I decided to have a bottle of scotch. Now, I used to drink a lot, I mean at least a fifth and I never had a problem, I never get hangovers. This day I was drinking the fifth of scotch I had, I gotten to 1/8 of the bottle and blackout. I wake up two hours later with my mom screaming and my skin blue, I didn't breathe for two minutes. Luckily my mom is medically trained and saved my life. I had no idea this would happen I mean I always drank WAY more than a fifth but because I didn't drink for half a year my tolerance went way down. Just be careful, it's so easy to overdose or drink too much, trust me everytime I od'd I felt compleately fine and then I blackout, you'll never see it coming. I say this not to discourage you from having a good time just be careful.
