so does anyone know why we still use the bible in court
i have to go to court to testify soon, and they are gonna make me swear on the holy bible
but im an atheist, so i guess im exempt from the truth

I have thought about this before as well. I think i would just keep it to myself that i think swearing on the bible is as comical as swearing on a stack of comics.

It wasn't even founded on christianity ncompletely. Nobody knows for sure what George Washingtons actual religion was. I read somewhere that many of our founding fathers were not Christian, in fact many of them followed similar beliefs to Paganism, though it's not paganism. They are different. Not witches or anything like that. Shit, I can't remember now. I'll have to look it up.

when i went to court and went up on the stand, i think i just had to raise my hand. i didnt see any bible around.
if they would have pulled a bible out, things would have been bad...

If you ask me, Freemasonry had more to do with our country's foundation than christianity. Masonic (and therefore pagan, even tho they arent a reilgous order, most of their imagery is based on paganism, like the pryamid with the eye on the dollar bill.) imagery aboundeverywhere in this nation, from the layout of the streets of our nation's capital, to the dollar bill, to the design of our notional monuments.
I get a good laugh out of the 'so help me god' part, too.

down here in australia you get the option of swearing on the bible or the honour of the court
its a pretty hard choice to make when your facing prison and the smallest little things like that have to be thought out
its like if you swear on the bible or koran, you are a sheep and the judge and jury could think that you have no respect for the court and law.
if you elect to swear on the honour of the court the judge could be a christian and judge you as a worthless heathen but our judges and magistrates are pretty fair and intelligent,thats why theyre there but some,especially a certain spinster judge i know are evil.
if i faced her again which i fucken hope i never do,id swear on the court

Being agnostic myself, I'd have to make sure the court understood my views before I did any swearing. But then, that's just talk.
If I was up there for some serious shit, I'd prolly just do the damn thing.

the lawyers and defenders know what the judges are essentially like so you get a good idea of the kind of judge you'll be facing
that evil spinster judge i mentioned was having an affair with a cop believe it or not,yes my jaw dropped when i was told.
it was court gossip i was told about by another solicitor i had after that case because for the next hearing for the same matter this bitch judge had to disqualify herself from my next case.
after she threw the maximum at me knowing i was innocent she sided with the cops even though we caught them out in a lie and she had to drop one of the charges,so we established they were lying but she held up the other charges anyway just because...
i nearly crapped my pants when she appeared in the court for the next case as i was about to be sentence but she was sentencing a couple of other cases before mine that day.
another judge came in and sentenced me after she left to my relief

...or you can be in my situation where my older brother has been a crazy meth addict for the past 10+ years. He has ~30 drug convictions among a whole host of other criminal activity. Hasn't been to jail yet, Australia is pretty soft unless you're either
A. Dealing/producing
B. Violence along with your posession etc.
Got court in 2 weeks for a bong, sucks really bad, the magistrate takes one look at my surname and absolutely fucking owns me.

it sux when family gets brought up but i can see that working for you because they might contrast you against your evil brother
i faced a really stern judge at port maquarie once and he knew my aunty as in she's a retired respectable head matron of the hospital up there but he also knew of my heroin ladled sister
he gave me a chance and set me free on bail when id broken it from a serious charge back in sydney
while i was on bail my brother invited me up to the mid north coast and attacked me and then when he realized he was going to get his ass beat he fled and called the cops and i was arrested and thrown in gaol straight away and that stern as fuck judge gave me a chance and gave me one day to get back to sydney
