Habitat: on old wood right next to a river
Gills: gills are attached, yellow with a strange green tint
Stem: thick, with a viel and bruising brownish purple, before it wasnt stained
Cap: most were pins, i left them to grow in case they are what i am looking for, but they were rather small
Spore print color: pending, it will be up- i promise
Bruising: strangly purple brown
Other information: Scent of the mushroom is mushroomy, oh and it is bitterly sweet. oh and the one all the way to the right is slightly dried out.

Hmm.... The fresh ones look a bit like Pholiota. Was the dried up one with the orange gills found in the same place?
Let us know what is up with that spore print.

oh and cure cat, i believe the fresh and the dried are the same, the only difference is the gills, but this could have been altered from drying out and the color could possibly be the spore deposit. but then again im no expert like you my friend.

They look exactly like suspected pholiota that ravage the top of my northern fav gym log!!( those Fuckers) - ive also found pluteus cervs on the same log aswell!! - It must be nice to make a mushroom Condo!?!?!
- ps - gyms may have some purple or magenta like bruising ( most often green ) -and look for it on lil penis shaped pinners!!! Thats ur best bet to confirm active gyms............
- the gills -no nice white gill edges- and scaly cap of your above finds are off - and also its just the size and total shape of the ones u found are off from gyms typical features - Just keep looking - they will be larger than what u've found there- Fall is the best time to find fruits!! - My logs up here in mid-north wi dried up!! September it is!!!
check out my pics for more visual info - PEACE!!

Yes, there is a good possibility.

I was thinking the same thing. The spores of some mushrooms only really start to develop fully when the mushrooms begin to desiccate- which would explain the lack of orange pigment on the gills of the fresh mushrooms.
On the other hand, as wiscokid points out, there may be two mushroom species (Gymnopilus and Pholiota perhaps) or more co-inhabiting the log.
So yes, spore prints. Keep 'em coming.

sporeprints are very important when encountering a unknown find!! - I Seriously doubt those are gyms!! - they might look close ( or like a sub species) - but for sure they don't resemble any of my active gyms from my locations! - check out my pic of dried gyms - the gill color is sooo close to cap color AND stem colors!! - and how my finds all have a persistant, thick annulus ring close to the cap!!
your finds above most closely resemble suspected Pholiota like i have found on my gym log - Do not eat!! Look at your 2nd photo - the specimen on the right top - it has a frilled toothlike edge around the cap - Just like the pholiota i find on top my log!! - Don't eat em!! - if u get a good sporeprint - a positive id may be possible - but id say u gotta keep looking for some active gyms bro! They are large too - Hence the title "big laughing gym" - Good luck

I would not have it any other way!

Pholiota - brown, light brown
Gymnopilus - Rusty brown, orange/brown

They can be quite small as well, though that is not the norm.
Also, I may have been unclear on one issue- Even if these turn out to have rusty spores, that doesn't necessarily mean that they are an active species, though I would not rule it out quite yet.
Danny is good at these. I'll go get him.

that toothlike veil remenant says pholiota to me!!- can anyone else see it - did u see it on em fresh matti?? -
both will show very similar spore coloration - its the size and stem shape that says it all
i do find some tiny gyms - but none the size of Mattis pics above would have broken their veil if they were gyms the veil would still be quite thick and membrane/cobwebby!!

mattianyb, yours are probably Pholiota, something close to Pholiota granulosa would be my first guess, though they could also be some small inactive Gymnopilus. Spore print would be cool here.
wiscokid, yours are Gymnopilus luteus. One of the most potent gyms.

yes the veil was quite strange because it split in many of the small specimens that i thought were just pins, but upon later inspection ended up having they're gills showing, also yes the fresh picking had a "tooth" looking veil too them, man I'm stumped on what this is. i can't wait till will figure it out. thanks guys a lot for staying strong on this thread. you will all be getting plus 5's after we figure this out.

If they're Pholiota there are quite a few of that stature and appearance. You'd probably have to send it to one of these geeks with their microscopes and stuff.
