dorm room cultivation of edibles
    #10560161 - 06/23/09 04:12 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Did a little bit of searching, but didn't find anything about edibles.

So, yeah, I'm getting interested in this hobby beyond the cubes and would like to culture some edibles/whatever I find in the woods.  First I'm going to start messing around with agar plates, which I'm prepared for.  Second, I will need a small greenhouse, an ultrasonic, and some other stuff for fruiting, which I need to buy.  A greenhouse is pretty much what I need right?

Does anybody know if they can hassle me for growing non-psychoactives in a dorm setting?  While agar is neato, I don't wanna just fiddle around without fruiting.  Is a small greenhouse gonna get me in trouble?  I'll be living in an apartment style dorm w/ no roommate.

I'm planning on sending the housing dept an email besides just asking you all.  But just curious if anyone here knew anything about this.

I'm gonna attempt to cultivate some oysters, shitakes, and agaricus bisporus.

Any thoughts?

=====
Keep up the good work guys.

See this:

and then see your psychiatrist if you want to try it.

Good growing.

oh noes!  I've been labeled.

Appreciate the heads up on the link.  Didn't see that on my first search.  I'll just use a kiddy pool or something for any pasteurization that I might have to do.

A plastic tote in a plastic tote would work better.

How will you get hot water?

the agaricus will probably be too difficult to do. the oysters are heavy spore depositors, and having such a high concentration of spores so close to your living/sleeping quarters is not a good idea. You would have to be careful and harvest early, and you'd probably want to leave your window open for the whole fruiting process

BE sure to remove the children before adding hydrated lime, javex, or 170 degree water to the kiddie pool.  If you use just dish soap  and cold water you can leave them in, it could be fun for the whole family.

I hope you're not there studying early childhood development.

I know I'm not.

:crazy2::eek:
Happy growing.

If you're growing edible mushrooms, you should be fine in your dorm.  Might want to check with an RA or hall manager.

Do you have a roommate?

You should be fine - if anyone harasses you about it, tell them you're a biology major.

I wouldn't touch cultivation of actives while you're living at college. I brought a bag of oysters over to a friends house once and people immediately started asking if I grew cubes.

If you are growing indoors on campus, i doubt there are any rules against it.

I'd make sure not to have any dried cubes, weed or anything that looks close to it near your dorm room.

Campus cops are bored assholes and love busting into peoples rooms. They wouldnt hesitate to put you through a bunch of bullshit and trying to pin anything on you.

If you go to a state school and live on campus you have absolutely zero rights of privacy from the school or campus police. They do not need a search warrant to enter your room. You could keep quiet and not party but they can make up any reason to enter your room, including strange smells.

My advice would be to keep it looking as innocent as possible because a humming closet with a extension cord running into it with glowing light coming out looks pretty suspicious

Id maybe look into monotubs. You could incubate in your closet then set them next to your window to receive indirect sunlight for fruiting

Yeah, as long as you're not doing anything illegal, there's no reason you'll get busted for growing LEGAL shit.  I mean, why would there even be rules against it?  You're allowed to have decorate plants, right?

Thanks for fillin' me in.  Monotubs can be used rather than a greenhouse for edibles?  Time for some searchin'.  Does one of those cultivars I mentioned grow on poop?  I haven't really done any researching of the A. bisporus.  Shiitakes like wood chips.  Oysters like straw.  Right?

shiitakes or shitakes?

really, this is my excuse to work with agar.

I need cheapest grow not necessarily most uber.

Oysters are the easiest and fastest.  They will not only eat straw, but also wood, paper, dry grass, bamboo, cardboard, cotton, hemp, flax, etc. You get the idea.

You can buy one at the supermarket and clone it.  There are different opinions around here about using supermarket specimens, but it has worked for me and some others also.

May I suggest a novelty grow. Launder and stuff an old teddy with pasteurized substrate and then spawn it with grains.  I had lots of fun with a phone book grow and a grow on old cotton clothes.  RR is famous for his Bible grow.  This would be a good on if at a religious college. Of course there's the brassiere grow..

It's a good start.

Bisporus is a lot of work and the poo-based substrate puts you in line for causing smells and also of being accused of growing cubes.

"No, really officer! I'm just growing the mushrooms I can buy at any supermarket for $1.99 a lb.  No, you cant't tell what it is while it's just mycelium.  Here, I'll prove it! Look at these spores...  You could come back when I fruit it, and then you'll see.  What do you mean you're taking it all away ?"

Would make a good skit, but still, I would avoid it.

Shitake would take longer but is not too hard either.

Didn't think about smells.  I guess I'll start with the oyster then.

Would I want to eat an oyster grown from cardboard?  I mean, is that healthy?

Oysters grown from cardboard are fine. The only concern in growing mushrooms off of newspaper is from the ink - modern inks are made with soybean oil and no longer contain lead.

Oysters would probably do poorly in a monotub. They need too much FAE.

I'd seen some people claim that some oysters fruited well in a tub. They showed some pics of the oysters that looked good but I didn't personally see them in the tub.

I would try it. In fact if I'm ever trapped in an apartment or something I will. You don't need to make cakes you can just spawn it to a bulk substrate.

wait...doesn't bulk require a monotub?  I've never worked with bulk, but don't bulk substrates  require different fae then what a shotgun offers?  Hence the big holes stuffed with polyfil.  Or am I confused about something?
