Melbourne ID Request Please
    #10528598 - 06/18/09 04:50 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

I am guessing these are Coprinopsis atramentaria - The extremely inky based prints lead me to this conclusion.  But as I am new and still earning to identify I was hoping to get a confirmation.  They were found in a garden bed in the North Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne.

Habitat:
It was growing in dirt, in a flower bed.

Gills:
Brown/Black

Stem:
2-3cms, the stem was hollow and felt slimy.  They were a couple of mm thick, easy to break with fingers.

Cap:
Grey Brown cap, bell shaped.  Not very large cap, when flat about 3-4cm

Spore print color:
Black and inky.  See photo's

Bruising:
Mushroom didn't really bruise

Other information:
A couple of the caps seems to disintergrate when trying to spore print them.  I covered each cap with a glas and left it for 24 hours, 2 of the 4 I printed basically turned to goo.  My fingers got very black handling these.

Thanks GK,

Shows I still got a lot to learn about ID'ing mushrooms - was close though  They are from the same species though right - both the Genus Coprinus species??

Cheers again for the ID.

Coprinellus is a genus, Coprinellus micaceus is a species.
They have formerly been placed in the genus Coprinus, which has since been split into several genera.
Coprinellus, Coprinopsis and Parasola are now considered to be part of the Psathyrellaceae family, whereas Coprinus is placed in Agaricaceae. The family Coprinaceae has consequently ceased to exist.
Taxonomists are a very strange breed of people that are never satisfied until they have you completely and utterly confused and thus the above description is likely to be changed around again when it's become more or less commonly accepted.
I usually refer to all of them as "coprinoids", no matter if the are Coprinus, Coprinellus, Coprinopsis or Parasola.
