Rhizomorph ID
    #10526547 - 06/17/09 08:37 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

I found these rhizomorphs today in a wood chip substrate.

Habitat: Wood chip garden

Gills: Chocolate brown colour cant see how they're attached.

Stem:
thick white stem that bruises blue.

Cap:
Caramel bruising blue around the base.

Does anyone know if they are edible, and if so how potent are they? Any help (info) on these mushrooms would be great

cheers

You should try to get your terminology in order. There is a difference between an "edible" and an "active" mushroom. "Edible" refers to a mushrooms culinary not psychedelic value.

You have found Weraroa novaezelandiae, a psilocybin containing pouch fungus. These are supposedly not suitable for drying as reports state that they'll lose most or all of their potency in the drying process (which I find extremely hard to believe and rather unlikely). Eaten fresh they are pretty potent however.

It's not called rhizomorphs, they are mushroom fruit bodies, plain and simple. Read up on rhizomorphs, people.
And yes, inski has found them as well.

This is not Weraroa, its the undescribed semi-secotioid Psilocybe species that Inski posted in his thread titled Rhizomorphs.

Oh wow. I wasn't aware of that. How were you guys able to distinguish between the two? Is it because they are not a completely closed pouch? What other features differ?

Yea these appear to be halfway in between, they have more of a caramel cap than the Weraroa.

Well, it appears inski has preserved the specimen he found and I have a feeling that the OP is going to bioassay them anyways, so he might as well post the results in this thread.

OMG!!! Me an my brother ate 9 of these between ourselves last night it was the most intense experience ever. The boundaries of reality were totally morphed couldn't understand basic concepts such as being an individual. It was like we were all one with the universe. Got really scary when i started melting into objects. We completely lost our minds! We wanted to get back to reality but couldn't even grasp what that was. All we new was it was the light at the end of the tunnel that was keeping us sane. Definitely hit a level 5 and it was our first time tripping. You just gota ride that shit out totally life changing!

You didn't weigh them out, did you? Too bad.
If you find them again, would you mind trying to take a spore print of one of the specimen (I'll explain to you what you gotta do if necessary)? I'd really be interested in getting my hands on some spores of those. Bear in mind that they are a rare, yet undescribed and unnamed species and there is a scientific interest in them.

Thats what happens when someone tells you to eat 2 or 3 and you eat 4 and a half.

Your life will never be the same again.  It will be a lot better, most likely.

I am not sure this will drop spores, but I bet it is real easy to grow.  I recommend starting from gill fragments.

I am glad you survived the experience and that you posted your results!

It is so pleasing to know of another active growing in NZ. It is a shame that I am not there this year, was really looking forward to the season.

Oh man, one thread titled "rhizomorphs" and now people are starting to think that it is a synonym for "mushroom" or a species of mushrooms....  HAHAHAHA!
