Inducing Salvia Divinorum flowering with Gibberellic Acid
    #10492833 - 06/12/09 06:08 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Has anyone experimented with flowering Salvia Divinorum with GA3? Thanks

No, but their seeds are notorious for being really hard to germinate (or just having abysmal germination rates in general).  At any rate, I'd be really interested to see how an experiment like this turned out.  It's going to get difficult to send cuttings soon, and I'd really like to see people get seed cultivation more established.

Legality, it's still simple; just label it as another plant.

GA3 is also routinely used to improve seed germination

Not having a return address is sketchy, better to write a fake return address than none at all.

next time you get some seeds you should try treating the seeds with it, in theory it should improve the germination rates.

I actually decided to try this out after reading your post - I used a small Salvia cutting I had, after two weeks there have been no signs that the plant is going to flower - it has however shown other classic responses to GA [rapid growth, increased inter-node distance, etc.] and is displaying deformed growth [I assume just because it is growing so rapidly] so it seems, unfortunately, that GA doesn't induce flowering in Salvia! Here is what the plant looks like now:

that poor plant may be root bound. root bound plants get like that. am i wrong? i saw the tiny little cup its in.

It's absolutely root bound at this point, I use Styrofoam cups to start all my cuttings in and didn't want to waste the soil/space on a larger pot just for a quick and dirty experiment.

Hmm. Glad someone tried this. What sort of solution did you use?  Different concentrations affect plant response differently (and each species responds differently). Everything from the classic increase internodal distance, to increased fruit size, to flowering, to death.

I did some experiments with GA3 and germination earlier in the summer, but didn't see any convincing results. I think my concentrations were too low, and I wasn't really working on a statistically significant scale.  Next spring I'll do better.
