How much straw/poo?
    #1049056 - 11/13/02 11:03 AM (21 years, 4 months ago)

I want to use rye berries to spawn a mix of pasteurized straw\horse shit. I'm gonna use 4 quart jars of colonized rye. I suppose this means i could use as much as 10 gallons of straw\poo (1:10 spawn:substrate ratio). How much really is this? How large of a casing surface would I probably be working with if i made the substrate 3 inches deep? I'm gonna case it with an inch of 50/50+ on top...and finally... and i do hesitate to ask... what kind of yeild? i know, i know, it's dependant on many factors... but i have no idea how much at all... ounces? pounds?

I'd be a little careful about that 1:10 ratio, even though many talk about it. I just used a 1:1 ratio for my earthworm casting and it is still colonizing 2 weeks after spawning. I incubated at 85 degrees and still going a little slow. But try it and see if it works!!! As for yeilds, expect about 10-20 dry grams per liter of substrate. So I would guess at least a pound or two...

1 to 10 % ratio is a standard under very controled circumstance with most "commercial" growers of edible shrooms. The higher the spawn ratio, generaly the faster the colonization. The raccoon uses around a 20% spawn ratio.

What your net result is going to be is dependant on to many factors to even guess.

Shred or tear the dung/straw as small as possible. Tight clumps take  more time to colonize, than fine stuff. Don't get the substrate too WET. That is the biggest error, most make.
