    #10477380 - 06/09/09 01:48 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I was considering ordering a Shiitake mushroom kit, from
http://www.fungi.com/kits/indoor.html

anyone have any experience with these or any other kits. I was wondering if they work very well, or If i should go the syringe route instead.

Kits are an easy way to start out.  For a first grow, I don't think it's a bad idea.  It will get you somewhat familiar with how mushrooms grow, and offers a pretty fail safe reward. Jumping straight to syringes might be overly frustrating.

FP sells good products, though you shouldn't link to non-sponsor websites here. (Even if they belong to the god of mushroom cultivation).

I bought that kit. it worked well for me. I didn't get a "lot" of mushrooms, but I did get like 5 or 6 flushes. each one with about 3 thick mushrooms,

i don't think anybody cares about that website as long as it doesn't get spammed in every post, i think its kind of a gray area.  that man has provided so much to everyone, altho a link direct to a kit might be a bit over the top lol...main page is much much more appropriate, altho others may feel different.

anyways it comes colinized and usually ready to fruit or already fruiting.  for the price, very reasonable  especially when you get the discount.  and don't forget you can grab spores from your fruits from any kit you grow, as well as a culture.  so nomatter where you buy from, kits are teh smart thing to do for a couple bucks more.

the sponsers have lots of kits too, and you can find there links under the banner at the top of the page.  and of course supporting them supports this website as well.

My first grow attempt was with Shiitake block from FP, and I'm having mixed success with it. The first fruiting seemed good, 7-9 good sized fruits, but also a bunch of aborted pins. I had to leave town for like 3 days right when it was starting to fruit so it got pretty dried out then. It's currently in it's second fruit and has produced only one mushroom. There are several bumps that look like they might pop, but meanwhile the one shroom grew all the way to harvest stage. I let the block dry out and rest for 10days then soaked for 24hr between fruits as the directions called for, but am a bit disappointed with the results. Is it normal to have such a small flush? Should I just give it more time?

How is your block coming Archon? Happy with it?

You probable already know this but when you get it make sure you mist it everyday. When I got mine it didn't say anything about that in the directions and it dried out and didn't do anything for a month but then I started misting it and everything was fine.

i just got my kits, and i have to leave town for army drill for a week. so im keeping them packed up until i get them back. I used to breed reptiles so i have a bunch of equipment im going to use. Im going to set it up in a terrarium and keep a ceramic heat lamp on there with a rheostat attached so i can adjust the temp. and keep the tank real humid. Ill let you know how it comes along.

Not a good idea.  Shiitake likes temperatures in the upper 50's to mid 60's.

I think this has been my problem, it had been about 70-80f in my apartment during the fruiting cycle.

Thanks for the input.
