Pennsylvania ID Request, Possible Ovoids
#10476956 - 06/09/09 12:33 PM (14 years, 9 months ago) |

Habitat: The mushrooms were growing on freshly put down mulch. There is another layer of decaying mulch beneath it.
Gills: The only good look I got at the gills was on a rather lopsided upside down mushroom.
Stem: Didn't quite get a look at the stems.
Cap: A Picture is worth a thousand words. One Cap was larger than the others.
Spore print color: Didn't do one yet.
Bruising: Have yet to pick them.
Other information: I found Ovoids about 2 feet away from where these are growing about 2 weeks ago.

are the gills concentric? it's kinda hard to tell from that pic, as half the mush is blocked from the stem. also, print one of em. also, tear on of them; is the consistency ttough and leatherlike?

Pics are a little washed out, but looks promising. I think I see some faint blue/green edges, and the gills seems to have a faint purplish hue. You should print them before the ID request though. If you found Ovoids only a few feet away before, chances are good no?

I would assume so.
We'll see. I'm hoping a T.I. will see this thread sooner or later.
I'll try to take some more detailed pictures.
Thanks. -MK

Sure looks like them, almost so much I want to tell you yes.
You need to look for a light purply dusted annulus (purple brown spore print is nicer yet), blue bruising, and a farinaceous odor.
(check the wiki shit for more detailed description if needed.)
If you're still unsure post some better pics.

I do think I see bruising on the gills and the stem. Gills look pretty much right too.
Here's a comparison if you need it.

Good.
While the topic is still active, I'd like to add that I found Oviods growing about 12" away from these last week.
A few questions:
1. Will they continue to regrow? How can I optimize regrowth? 2. Will adding common garden nutrients (Nitrogen, Potassium, Calcium) aid in their growth? 3. Should I water them? 4. Is it possible that there is a massive awesome underground network of Mycelium that is causing these to pop up the same general location? Or is it purely spore reproduction?
I've searched all over, and I can't find answers.
Thank you SHROOMERY!
More Importantly, Thanks EVERYBODY!

Provide 70 percent shade and feed them fresh hardwood wood chips.

How about adding nutrients to the soil?
I'd like to regrow this species in a better location w/ more shade, in larger quantities. I would need to sterilize wood chips, but how would I inoculate them with this specific strain of mushroom?

Just add water.

Since you are sterilzing wood chips I suggest using grain spawn to inoculate them.
You could also do non-sterile cultivation which involves putting stem butts or bits of mycelium in with fresh wood chips.

An easier way would be to find a spot in the woods (in relatively the same kind of area you found ovoids in), clear away the vegetation to bare soil, then spread fresh chipped wood about 2 inches thick over all. (asking don't know for sure Alan.)
Then put down some colonized sticks and small logs on the wood chip bed, and cover over with 2 more inches of fresh wood chips.

Thanks for all the help everybody.
DannyGlick, I've heard of growers using both sterile and non sterile wood chips for a procedure such as this. Would you, or anybody else have a recommendation for that matter as so sterilize or not?
