Invention Nation - Interesting Mushroom Usage

I just watched a episode of Invention Nation (Planet Green channel) about growing mycelium on a perlite based substrate then drying it out before fungal development and using it as a green source of insulation. And the perlite made it fire-proof.
I just thought this was absolutely cool and wanted to share!

Hey,
yea I meant to watch that too. But I forgot it was on perlite. Did they elaborate on the process? I ask because some of use are doing a 'hydro' growing contest and I was considering using perlite. Thanks!

I'd have to watch it again - they did mix the perlite with a nutrient, then just poured the LC right into the bowl with the mix, then placed the complete mixture into square plastic boxes and let it grow. I'll look at it again

Perlite spawn was popular in the 80s. It was usually made with wheat or rice bran and perlite. It would rarely fruit, but it did make for a decent spawn. The problem was getting it out of the jars without a spoon or some other tool, which adds another vector of contamination. I suspect the 'pf tek' was invented by accident by trying to substitute vermiculite for perlite, and viola, it fruited.
You can't just get perlite wet and inoculate it. RR

Found it on YouTube. They inoculate perlite mixed with sawdust and some sort of nutrient - I'm guessing gypsum and possibly some sort of oat bran. The tiles are dried out after they've colonized.

Thanks for the initial post. Stuff like this really interests me - I actually looked up the company and shot them off an email, in the hopes to begin correspondence with at least one of the guys working on this project.
Unfortunately, it's probably going to be a lot harder for this stuff to actually work. RR posted about it a year or so ago: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7944374#7944374

This is somewhat pertaining, but not really
I just had this idea, which has some obvious downfalls, but:
what if mycelium was pressed into sheets and used as either writing paper, or rolling paper for cigarettes?
because littering, could actually be helpful... just you couldn't get anything wet
Also, the mycelium would also probably die somewhere along the line, perhaps.
PS: just found a study on mycelial paper: http://smartech.gatech.edu/handle/1853/3041
... it's pretty damned detailed

That's one of the coolest things i've seen in a while! It reminds me that we don't need all these chemicals around us in everyday life, nature provides us with everything we need, we just have to actually use it instead of taking the fast lane and killing ourselves in the long run.
Thanks for posting this!

that is fucking awesome. So if one were considdering doing that how would one dry it and what amount or type of nutrients with the perelite would be consumed wholly the easiest. It looks like it has quite a potential to be a commercial insulation, but as above posters said it could be a nuisance if it gets wet (more so I mean than regular insulation I mean).
