the pins/ mushrooms look wierd.. (?)
    #10412400 - 05/28/09 08:21 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

hey guys,

So looking at my FRIEND'S fruiting cakes...

The first pins are starting to really grow up, and there are suddenly a lot more pins forming as well.
BUT, (they are tazmanians) the caps don't look like i'd expect - they are not one solid color.
Most of the caps have white spots on them (may this be some sort of cracking?? of the skin from dehydration?-they're in a monotub set-up with perlite base, and it seems fine in terms of humidity

Then there is this one cap, it has a dark cap, like much darker than the other ones, and it has a ring of white stuff caked on the cap that goes around the outside of it.  (this one's a bit bigger and i can see it better) -it looks like the stuff isn't like an opening in the cap, but rather like a skin going over the top.

MY QUESTIONS:
1 - what exactly is this white stuff i'm seeing
2 - why do some caps look 2x as dark as others, is this common?
3 - should i change something to help this? or just not worry.

*here's a picture, just turn your head upside down or flip the image, its upside down - he has 4 cakes, 2 cased, 2 non-cased
The dark one i'm talking about is towards the outside of the fc, growing off the bottom of the cake (by the jar lid it's sitting on)
if you flip the image, it is the leftmost pin/shroom thing*

sorry i dont have anything better than my webcam to take pictures...

sounds like mycelium on the cap,  I have white caps all the time, some just have it on them as they grow and it will eventually fade off

how often do you guys see really dark caps? does it happen too much? - aborts don't look really any different, do they?

and so i guess.. if this is mycelium i got nothin to worry about (?)

so the picture works now - but its shitty quality

sorry its the best i can get, probably doesnt help at all
(click the icon below my name to the left)

basically, picture a bunch of 1/2 inch long pins that look normal and healthy for the most part, that are a light yellowish orange.
then this one thats a dark reddish brown, with white dots around the outside of the cap, and less white stuff in the middle of the cap

The dark your labeling is most likely an abort, if its still that size when you harvest your fruits its an abort, keep it!

everything looks fine

THANKS man,

its nice to get a solid answer, i figured it might be that

so just thinking... two are uncased, one is cased with 100% vermiculite, and one is cased with 50%peat moss 50%vermiculite.

What do you guys predict will happen?  I'm testing this cause i read so much conflicting information online - do you think the casing will help that much?

4 total cakes isn't much of an experiment.  even if 1 or the other performs better you couldn't attribute it to the casing.

In my opinion case or roll them all in 100% vermiculite that has been baked in the oven for an hour at 350(to kill any mold spores)
Thats what I do and get pretty consistent and pleasing results

it acts as a water reservoir to replenish your cake with water if it need it.

i dont know the answer to this but are you sure its a good idea to be using a monotub style fc when fruiting from cakes?

NOOO

seriously i'm not sure at all - i've never read anything about it!

we'll find out.. its working so far

the reason he thought monotub was because he's also doing a monotub bulk substrate, and realized that bulk is the way to go, so he probably wont be fruiting many cakes - he wanted the $8 tub to be re-usable, instead of having a shotgun that would be harder to maintain - and requiring cakes
Anyone else have any input on this?

that setup for cakes will be fine.  just be sure to give it several manual fannings a day.

Why?  shouldn't it be no different than the regular monotubs that get enough exchange?

should he mist it more because they're cakes?

Mist as needed.
May or may not need hand fanning, wait and see. Probably will, though.

UPDATE guys,

so the dark cap i mentioned has the white stuff that doesnt quite look like mycelium, but there is another cap that just has mycelium growing out of it...  will this be a big issue, does it just kind of happen sometimes?

im no expert but i dont think that type fc is good use for cakes a shotgun fc, also iyou mentioned wrinkled shroomies.
usually when my shrms are wrinkled they have hollow stems which i believe is a sign of waterlogged/over watered shrms.
give the stem a litle sqeeze n let me no if i am right.
the wite bits are myc.
