final word... on when to harvest pins on cakes.

ok .. so i've read both sides of the argument, but i wanna know which is best.
1.) leave them to mature..
2.) harvest all within 24 hours of the first shroom maturing.
leaving them.. means you get all fully mature shrooms...
but then harvesting them and starting from scratch means you have proper flushes. and i've heard that this is the correct way...
currently on my cakes there are very inconsistant sizes... with some being less than a cm tall (and growing) and some being mature adults..
and these 'bigguns were from the same flush, but left on the cake
on my new cakes, there are some almost mature mushies.. yet there are still hypnal knots forming?
so what's best? b

I pick mature mushrooms and continue to dunk with pins attached. They mature later and that is fine with me.

That;s pretty cool Shroominit. Usually a good dunk is 24 hrs and that could rot your pins. But if the cake has good air exchange the pins might be safe. If the cake still seems moist you should let those pins suck up water!

have you compared... doing it that way with the other way?
or dya reckon it's the same either way.. the substrate has a certain amount of 'power' and it can either grow bigger shrooms... or more of them? (or am a wrong..)

Pick them whenever you want too. No one can say for sure that one way is better than the other, it is all about what you want and what you are doing at this point.

so. harvesting them when they're still young... won't reduce overall yield? drastically

nope, your cake will just grow more shrooms. this was a hard one for me to get a grasp on, but it is true.

I have not compared them, but to me it seems a waste to pick them as pins if they will continue to grow just as well as the previous mushrooms have. So why not keep them around? Also I've never had a problem with rot, maybe in an area with more bacteria I would be concerned.

is OK to ask but... to ask every single question in its own tread! COME ON!
Any ways!
Example: if a substrate is capable of producing a pound of dry mushrooms you will get just that! weather is 1 huge one that weights a pound or 480 little that weight a gram each

Rot isn't a huge threat but it depends on how big the pins are. Trust your gut and remember you learn as you go and you will be on your next grow before you know it

I would recommend against picking pins, but you can harvest long before the veil breaks with no loss on yield.

pins can sometimes appear that wont mature until later flushes, remove them and you've just harvested part of a future flush.
Theres really no reason to harvest all in 1 go. and sometimes you just dont know when 1 flush begins and 1 flush ends.
Your mycelium will do what it wants to do.
If you have pins and you need to dunk, leave them there, dunk as usualy and give your terrariumn a nice good FAE to dry the moisture of them.

I don't know what you meant by "These Days" but; I am feelin you on that man... I cant sleep a wink b/c I been trippen so much lately!!! FUCK! I gotta quit.
As to the OP, Yeah, I always pick mine before the veil breaks (just before) b/c then you get a "Pretty" mushroom, with the wrinkled golden cap; if the mature too much, once dried, they become "Unrecognizable" i.e. someone who didn't grow them wouldn't know wtf they were, and have to take your word for it' kuz they'd be all black and nasty lookin

bob, you've received some odd advice. you can pick your shrooms on a fruit by fruit basis, just before the veil tears. picking pins for no good reason WILL affect future flushes and your overall yield. cakes don't pin indefinitely.

2.) harvest all within 24 hours of the first shroom maturing.
who is recommending this?

erm.... don't remember. i've seen it on a few posts... i tend to believe.. or at least consider believing most new things i read on here. unless i have facts against it..
ok i'll just let em mature. and you can dunk with fairly big pins?
cheers
