Grafting question
    #10392574 - 05/24/09 07:01 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I grafted a lophophora williamsii button to pereskiopsis plant, the loph is solidly connected to the graft, i touched it a couple times and it didnt budge, however, the pereskiopsis has attempted to make shoots (for the third time) from the nearest areoles. Doesnt this mean the graft didnt take? Should i try to regraft? Thanks all

No, it doesn't necessairly mean it didn't take. I'm pretty sure some people have to keep cutting the shoots until it has no aeroles left to grow from and gets the idea, but wait until a more experienced grafter replies!

The graft probably took if you didn't notice any deflation of the scion. Take a razorblade and cut the shoots off that are trying to grow or just pinch them off or whatever. The pereskiopsis will try to do this for a while. Just keep watch on it. If you don't lob them off, you'll notice a decreased growth rate of your scion...In fact, a decreased scion growth rate is a good indicator that your pereskiopsis is trying to pup.

pereskiopsis are little bastards, they just require lots of attention with pinching them.  i got some that are still trying to throw out offsets after 6 months....even though the scions are growing quick...they just be a pain.
