The Problem Of Ideological Monopolies
    #10351283 - 05/17/09 01:37 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

The fact that the nationalizing of certain industries is considered socialism is tragic. One reason it is tragic is that people who wish to nationalize a industry in their country may feel as though they have to identify with socialism. It makes sense for countries to nationalize their oil and mineral reserves if the wealth of their nation is being expropriated and sent to foreign lands. This was the case in Venezuela. Venezuela sits on a lot of oil and for a long time the wealth of that oil was simply sent to foreign lands while the people of Venezuela were living in shacks. So I can understand nationalizing the oil industry.

However I do not agree with socialism and I do not agree with socialism because in socialism often promotes socialized medicine. I am against socialized medicine because I believe in a separation of state and hospital. Hospitals have a history of tyranny. I promote the idea of DIY(do it yourself) medicine.

After the Mexican revolution(the revolution started din 1910 and ended in the 1920's) Mexico nationalized its oil industry. However they did not have an extreme socialist agenda attached to the nationalizing of the oil industry. This demonstrates that nationalizations can occur outside of a socialist framework.

A major problem is the monopoly certain political ideologies have over certain ideas. The socialist ideology has, at least in America, nearly monopolized the concept of nationalization. Hence people who support nationalization of certain industries may feel pressured into being socialists. The origin of this can be traced back to Latin American efforts to nationalize certain industries in the middle of the 20th century where the USA incorrectly labeled such efforts as being related to socialism.

What worries me about nationalizing certain industries is is I worry that such activity could lead to a disrespect for a persons right to own property. Although I worry about that I am not opposed to the nationalization of oil industries in places such as Mexico and Venezuela. I can understand the logic behind it and I do not think the move to nationalize certain industries should be bound up with socialism.

Maybe I do not need to worry about the nationalization of certain industries leading to a lack of respect for property rights, on the other hand maybe it is something I would need to be concerned with. I am not sure. Maybe it is possible to allow for nationalization of certain industries while simultaneously vigorously defending private property in other sectors of society.

People need to be more varied with regards to their political ideologies. It does not make sense for certain ideologies to have a monopoly on certain concepts. Socialism should not have a monopoly on the concept of nationalization.

The idea of a "two-party" system is injurious to political health. The way to create more ideology variety is to allow for more political parties to come into existence.
