Would you buy this motorcycle - Kawasaki KLR 650, 04.
    #10340633 - 05/14/09 10:11 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

So im super looking forward to getting into motorcycle riding.

My search for a bike to be my new commuter/offroad adventure tool, and hopefully a long distance hwy/touring machine, has lead me to conclude that a Kawasaki KLR 650 is what i need.

I've pretty much wrapped my mind around buying this model of bike. - its known as one of the best all around machines.

Yesterday, i was disappointed to find out a 2000 w/ high milage and all the necessary upgrades, was "promised" to a priest...

So i was looking around and found this:

In a nearby town. an 04 with 4096kms on it, some upgrades, and all original paperwork. The bike is pretty much brand new! $4500, but he said he'd knock a few hundred bucks off and throw in a helmet!

The guys a nurse but kept on saying "buddy, dont worry about it." real friendly though, says he bought a harley. - always feel sketchy buying stuff privately :S

Going to check it out on Monday!

The red I think would look nicer i'm just not into the dirtbike look it's got going on. A harley or that bike are what i've been looking into recently.

Ahhh a traveling bike that is legit. If I needed a bike to pack all that shit onto I would choose that model as well. Or a nice new BMW cycle.

The KLR is an amazing machine. I was looking into buying one for years because of gas mileage and that especially nice offroad capability (I live in north Georgia, tons of gravel and dirt roads/trails). I wound up getting an '07 Kawi ZZR600 for speed and fun over the other two advantages of the 650, but I had two dirtbikes anyway. Go for one, even get a new 08/09 model; sexiness.

I am not a dirtbike person either. but Kawasakis are good quality bikes.

Kawi's are indeed great, I always either ride green or ride red; Honda can make a hell of a bike engine. Speaking of which, there's also the Honda XR650, overall same feel and style of the KLR, just uglier by a longshot.

you know, im a fan of the Ugly bike. Im actually quite turned off by the sparkly newness of the top one i posted...

I was looking at a used 2004 honda xr650 last night when i thought the klr was sold out from under me. It seems to be alot more trail oriented than road oriented...

Another benefit of the KLR is the amount of aftermarket parts available + like you were saying great milage with power and onroad off/road capabilities.

Aftermarket for the win, but I do prefer the red's tourqier engine. I only looked for KLRs because both of my aforementioned dirtbikes were Honda. If I was to get an on/off road bike now, I have to say that I adore the new KLX 250.

There are several of those for sale, used, around here.

Certainly cheaper to insure and gas up, however - definately not capable as a long distance touring bike + quite a bit more uncomfortable for long hwy rides.

OP, I wouldn't ride that bike with a gun to my head.

Honestly I wanna push people off their bikes when they ride those ugly contraptions!

I'm also 110% against buying something that's used so another reason I wouldn't buy it.

That's just me though

i dont know, I like the Triumph Bonneville but I hear that Triumphs are
prone to mechanical problems. I would really like a Moto Guzi but I fear
that mechanical issues would make it costly to maintain b/c the bike is
Italian and parts therefore would be expensive.

I dont see the problem with used cycles. I am in the market for a used
Yamaha, Honda, or Kawasaki.

Totally - used is the way to go.

The second the bike leaves the lot, it depreciates nearly 50% unless its something in hot demand/specialty bike.

Lots of rich folk buy bikes and then figure it's "not for me" and sell them cheap. - which sounds like is what happened with the bike i am looking at.

From what i know, motorcycles are pretty dependable, especially the lowertech ones.

Why buy new, when you could buy used? Do you like throwing out money hand over fist for the tinsy bit of security buying new MIGHT buy you, hpi?

Being an informed consumer is the most important part of buying used..

I dont know why you'd want to push people off "ugly" dualsports - they're functional + extremely practical.

I suppose we all have our own reasons for wanting to ride...

Me: I want to go to remote places, i want to commute cheap, i want to not be insulated in a car. I want to beat around the bush + go far pff places, without breaking the bank. I want to not be reliant on a gas guzzling car.

wow, I had no idea had no idea bikes depreciated that fast.

bikes in general are pretty dependable, but I have decided to
stay away from the Italian and British bikes b/c parts cost more,
plus the amount of people knowledgeable enough to fix them
is smaller so it would probably cost more in the long run.

just like cars, you cant go wrong with Jap bikes.

I dont mind dual sports at all, but my main reasons for riding are cheap
commutes and to be out of my car. lol, I have put about 5k on my 2005 Subaru
in the past 2 yrs b/c I prefer to ride my motorcycle or scooter everywhere ( i work
downtown and can park my scoot right in front of the building on the sidewalk for free
instead of paying $100 a month to park in the garage)

I dont like Harleys b.c I view the bike as more of a cultural phenomenon. I dont want
to have to start cutting the sleeves off all my t shirts just to fit in w. that crowd.

I am looking for a bike w. a sidecar, actually. Anyone have any experience w/ sidecars?

Maybe on some of their conventional bikes, but I can find no fault with the sexy 3-cylinder Daytona 675 (And neither can the toughest critics). My next bike, btw.
