Why petri dishes?
    #1033215 - 11/07/02 04:07 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

Why couldent you efficently just pour your agar into the short fat 1/2 pint jars instead of petri dishes? Would this work?

It's alot easier to work with petri dishes though.. and they also take up alot less room.

But this would make agar way cheeper for the home cultivator and more practical as alot of people dont have 50 bucks for glass petris and you can only get them on the internet. You also could just pre measure out the amounts in each jar and save the contaminant risk of pouring the dishes. Im sure you could also just use filter disks and inject with small amounts of dark spore solution or liquid mycellia (this might not work). Tell me if you think somthing like this might work

Believe me, if you tried both you would stick with the petris.
Petris aren't expensive, I got 500 disposables for $100. They're probably cheaper in america.

i was thinking of plastic dishes.. didnt even know they made glass ones. And the ones i've seen are not expensive at all. No more then 12 jars would cost

I was mainly talking about the pyrex petris. The plastic ones arent autoclavable and I dont know how to sterilize

They come sterile.
When I bought my disposables, they had "un-sterile" for $100 and "sterile" for $130.
Apparently the sterile ones had been gamma irradiated, so they were guaranteed sterile. The "unsterile" ones hadn't been irradiated but the whole production line is sterile so they are sterile enough for everything but the most critical forensic work.

Yea they say "sterile unless bag is opened or punctured" My bag is punctured and even if it wasent I will never use 20 petri dishes at 1 time so it would be a waste. I was basically trying to find a cheep way of making contaminant free petris without a 300 dollar flow hood. I tyhink the pyrex petris are worth investing in due to you shouldent have to buy new ones and there autoclavable

ever think to put the lid on, and microwave it for 30 seconds?

radiation kills just about everything!

With the Homestead Book Company's EZ grow kit, you add the spores directly to the grain. Then dump the grain into the compost after the mycelium takes over. It seems to work great! No petri dishes required.

Primitive organisms can take a huge amount of radiation, and no amount of microwave radiation would kill them directly.

Microwaves specifically excite molecular rotations; these
do not have any direct effect on the integrity of living systems. However,
the energy in these rotational modes of motion eventually becomes general
heat released to the surroundings; if enough microwave energy is dumped
into a system, it will get hot. Increased temperature does cause
irreversible chemical changes in living systems, and that is what kills
them.
