are my WBS jars doomed? -UPDATE- with more *pics*
    #10329771 - 05/12/09 09:39 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

*scroll down for UPDATE in reply*

on april 20th i inoculated five 500ml WBS jars with a spore syringe from a non-sponsor. i know better now, but i didn't want to waste my remaining syringes.

this is my second attempt at growing mushrooms. my first attempt, also using WBS, is still sitting in my closet and i'm doubtful it will amount to anything.

for my second try, i decided to simmer the WBS instead of just soaking/rinsing/drying. the water content looked perfect when i loaded the jars, but after pressure cooking for 90mins, some of the seeds had burst and moisture appeared to have pooled at the bottom of the jars. i think this mixed with the burst seeds and turned into a generally unpleasant looking goop. i did not shake the jars after pressure cooking.

so i wasn't expecting much to happen, but i decided to wait and see. 22 days later and there is finally growth in two out of five jars. first of all is this too long to wait? are these jars most likely contaminated?

once it gets going, this BR mycelium is insanely fast and seems to just grow around the "goop", but will it be a problem later on when i try to spawn to bulk?

jar #1

jar #2

the two WBS jars remaining from my first attempt are now doing quite well, but it has been 43 days since inoculation!!!

jar #3

jar #4

i plan on shaking jar #4 tonight... but should i even bother? are my jars already teeming with bacteria after 43 days? is the WBS way too dry by now? the myc is still trucking along at a very nice pace, but i don't know if that means anything.

is there an easier way to achieve the proper moisture content with WBS?

has anyone tried this tek?

thanks for your time, have a lovely night! :sun:

I see no contams inthose jars. Just shake them soon to distribute the
mycellium

Some of those pictures (picture #2) definitely look like they're suffering from bacterial bloom. 43 days for 10% colonization from multispore is a sign that something is wrong. Colonization will likely be agonizingly slow before stalling out. Personally, I would chuck them and start over.

It's happened to me recently - I inoculated a dozen jars with ATL #7 and tucked them away. They took over a month to germinate and then colonization was incredibly slow and they appear contaminated, so they're getting tossed.

Those aren't coffee filters as your only filter right? If so, they are most likely fuct. Tyvek or polyfil or even a verm layer but NEVER coffee filters because the pores are to big. good quality pictures though.

the coffee filters are just dust covers. those lids have two small holes (about 1/2 cm) punched in them packed with polyfil. for jars #3 and #4 i made two smaller holes just big enough for the needle tip, and covered them with micropore.

*sigh* i figured they were fucked. :frown:

the mycelium was really fun to watch grow though...

thanks

i took a whiff of the jars, (without removing the lids or filters,) and it doesn't smell like anything... but i wouldn't go on my nose alone! lol

I'm no expert, but pic #2 looks exactly like a couple spots in my jars, which are way too young to have any contamination yet. That's probably just a too-wet burst grain - starchy mush. Looks terrible when it's against the glass like that. No biggy.

But, as other people here have mentioned, if it smells bad it is bad. I certainly wouldn't chuck em yet. It isn't going to hurt anything to wait and see.

Anyway, judging by the pics, those jars look perfectly healthy, if slow growing. As shroomgreen89 says, once you hit 30% growth or so, shake them up good to distribute the mycelium for faster growth. If it's dragging at 10%-15% as in your pics, I would shake them then, but that's just me.

My first attempt also took nearly 35 days to start to show growth and i suspect that it was due to the water content being too high in the jars. Growth did not start until after the jars seemed to have dried out a little bit. I would keep them regardless, not point in throwing out jars that are starting to colonize right?

hmm.... so are they or aren't they totally fucked? i should point out that the myc hasn't stalled, it's growing quite fast. it even seems to be speeding up.

either way i want to start another batch of WBS soon. this time i think i'm going to do a test batch using the "grain for simple minds" tek on fungifun.org. has anyone else had success using a similar method? (measuring out the proper grain/water amounts and pc-ing just like that, rather than soaking/simmering?) even though the fungifun tek doesn't mention it, i'm going to rinse the WBS first to get rid of the floaters, and try wash off some of the awful chemicals they put in there...

would any of you change anything about what i'm doing with my jars?

thanks, and happy shrooming!

You're fine bud! Just remember to shake your jars once they hit 20-25% colonization and let them go. I found out what happens when you don't shake - the uncolonized WBS started to rot -- blech!

thanks... i'll be giving jar #4 a shake real soon.

hmm... 6T's tek looks pretty simple too. seems to be a lot of success stories with it. any thoughts on the best/easiest way to achieve proper water content with WBS?

bah... couldn't wait any longer... gave jar #4 a shake. it was fun. man fungus is wicked!

the myc is pretty evenly dispersed now..  hopefully it'll regroup and start tearing through those grains!

I wish you luck with that man. I've been growing out GT for the last few months. I've found that multispore innocs tend to be very hit and miss affairs. I did ten pint jars last, of those, 2 contammed, 3 ripped through 90% then stalled, and the remainder showed nothing for a couple of weeks. They're all colonizing, but pretty slowly. I shook one of the quick starters, but it didn't seem to help, if anything the myc just doesn't look like it's recovered very well.

thanks, you too!

courtesy of a nervous tick that involves my index finger and a camera shutter, here is an update:

BR jar #2 is still colonizing insanely quickly. the myc seems to be overtaking the yellowish mush, which may or may not be bacteria. still hoping to get more opinions on this??!

GT jar #4 seems to be starting to recover from shaking about 24 hours ago. This is 45 days since inoculation!!! is it even heard of to fruit successfully using substrate that took this long to colonize?

thanks for your time! if i ever get to my first harvest, i promise to remember you always, and share copious amounts of mycoporn... featuring ACTUAL fruit bodies!!!  :regularshroom:     :bow2:

I don't know if anyone else already wrote about this, but to avoid bursting grains and wbs, i soak overnight then drain and rinse, then before putting them back in jars, I add about 3/4" to 1" of slightly dry hydrated coir in the bottom, then fill jars with about 1" of headroom with the wbs/grain, then pc.  I don't simmer, and the coir in the bottom ensures there's not too much water in the spawn.  Then I close up the jars (I always use tyvek for filter disc), foil them up and pc for 75 minutes.  I'm assured no burst grains and a perfect water content.  Just my 2 cents...hope I didn't rip anyone off without knowing it.
