tips?
    #10324286 - 05/11/09 09:03 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I just spent the last 3 hours working on a monotub. It's bottom is cased in 1/2 inch verm, peat moss. spawned a brf cake then mixed with coco coir. but not only did i not have enough spawn to cover it for safe measure but I didn't have enough to fill the substrate to the point of fast colonization. any tips on keeping it contam free while I wait an extra long time for it to colonize?

There should not be a casing layer on the bottom.

Make more spawn next time. Also, don't eff with it too much. Just neglect it and let it do it's thing. A daily check would be good, though.

The casing layer goes on top.  The tek you referred to says to only put verm on bottom as a moisture reservoir.  The peat/verm goes on top.  However, with the development of dunking/soaking teks, the bottom layer of verm is obsolete and leads to over saturation of the substrate if you're not careful.  In addition, cubensis doesn't even need a casing layer, nor does it benefit from one if optimal conditions are met.
