shotgun FC and humidity
    #10320946 - 05/11/09 05:11 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I have converted my air-pump FC into a shotgun FC.What I have gained in air-exchange I seem to have lost in humidity level. My gauge is somewhere in the 70's instead of the 90's.There is plenty of wet Perlite in there but all those holes let out more than just old air.Is 70 good enough humidity for my guys to thrive?

Higher is better IMO.  Is there a draft in the room?

I don't think so. At least it is not noticeable.

And misting?  Misting gets the humidity high, and the chamber keeps it high for a while.  You should fan just after misting to start the evaporation process.

Also, what is the RH in the room?  Because from what I understand, shotgun works for +50% RH in room...

Noggin: The humidity in the room is average 60. I will try misting and fanning.

That is a completely logical thing to happen.

Why do you stick a hose in it? dont you have holes drilled in the sides?

Any luck with misting?  I'm assuming your hygrometer is all good eh?

I bought one the other day from the cigar shop - it doesn't go above 75% RH!  Such crap.

thats because it is not designed for that. cigars must be stored at about 70% so it does exactly what it is designed to do. be accurate in THAT range.

you must buy one that you can calibrate yourself. for your specific purpose!

It's physically impossible for a properly made shotgun terrarium to be less than 85% humidity, even with the darn lid off.  Calibrate your hygrometer.

MY humidity now seems to be correcting itself. It is about 85 or even higher.I am using a different hygrometer and maybe the other is out of whack.
