Feed Store, no rye berries

Went to two feed stores today. Conversations went like this:
"Can I help you find something?"
"Rye berries, I'm looking for rye berries."
"What's that?"
"Rye... berries. Rye. Like rye bread? Only, whole grain."
"We don't have that. Does it have another name?"
"Rye something. It's not wheat or oats or anything, it's rye."
"We don't have that".
Sigh. So I got a small bag at the health food store for 84 cents a pound. I may end up mail ordering the stuff after all.
... and don't even ask about the Tyvek search.

Around here, they call it winter rye. I called the feed stores (too lazy to waste a trip on bunk) and asked them if they had any rye based feed. Only a moron would not know if they has something like that in their own store!

It's also called 'winter rye' or 'rye grain'. I think you can also use wheat grain. You can also use 'rye grass seed' but it's a bit more difficult to get the moisture level correct. Actually I think you can use just about any grass seed. Or you can use 'wild bird seed' or popcorn.

Yeah, I've been using WBS for years. But rye is better. Easier, too. I'd just like to get it at a better price.
I ended up ordering envelopes, too. Tried to find the Tyvek coveralls, no luck. Three big hardware stores, no Tyvek. "Breathable polypropylene", which sure doesn't sound like it would take PCing very well. Then I tried just walking into the PO and getting a few, but they didn't have them out.
You know it's federal crime to do anything with those envelopes besides mail things with them? I'm using my 10, then that's it- I'll mail order that too, if I have to.

Polypropylene is the same stuff that B&D syringes are made of that makes them PC'able. I use Breathable polypropylene as filters for my Jars, although I do use 2 layers, and secure with an elastic band.

84 cents a pound isn't bad and the tyvek well you can go to any new construction site and get there scarpe tyvek. There should be plenty to last a long time the construction rolls are 10'x100' so even if they had a six inch end piece it will last some time. CH

Organic rye berries can be found at health food stores, or by searching online for a distributor in your area if you're going to use a lot. RR

Rye can be found either at health stores, bulk food stores, and just about anywhere with "granary" in the title. Don't go for the big chains, look for the small local shops.

as someone has already mentioned...
in a Feed Store or a Grange, ask for Rye Grain...
and Winter Rye is what they would be selling this time of year.
Alot of Feed Stores aren't going to know what a Rye Berry is.

I ended up getting some at the health food store, like I said. But I was hoping to find one of those big bags you show in the video. I haven't given up yet, but I need to make some calls. Didn't think to call it 'Winter Rye', though I knew that. Still, you'd think with that two employees in two different stores, one of them would have said 'Oh, rye? Like winter rye?'
The other fun quest was verm. I have a local nursery that sells it in big bags, and Ace Hardware has the 8qt bags. But not Home Depot or Lowes. Go figure.

Not yet. I thought of that, though. There's a Sherwin Williams, and a local store, not too far from here. I'll check that another day. Or buy the polypro ones and see how that goes.
I just thought the whole thing with the feed stores was funny though. They didn't bother to ask me what I wanted 'em for, which was a bit disappointing. I was going to tell them all about biorecycling, growing oysters on newspaper and coffee grounds. Met a really nice cat, though. He followed me around the store and helped me browse.

Homebase and B&Q (that's the UK equivalent of Home Depot and Lowes) seem to have quit selling verm and perlite too. They say nobody knows what to do with it unless they are keen gardeners, so they stopped stocking it.
