Proposed Substrate
    #10303015 - 05/07/09 03:04 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

So I'm planning a grow of some Ecquador and B+.

I was thinking of going with a substrate of this compound.

45% Vermiculite
35% Rabbit Dung
30% Brown Rice

Any thoughts on that?  Recommendations?  I will be casing with it.

Casing with it?
Or using it as a bulk substrate, with an optional casing layer?

Either way, I'd leave out the grains.

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

Brown rice would be used as spawn as in a grain jar, but is a poor spawn material.  If you have a PC, use rye grain for this purpose.  Rice should not be used as a bulk substrate.

I've never heard of using rabbit dung but I think it might be likely to be a valid bulk substrate.

You seem to be confused about what to use as spawn and what is a bulk substrate.  You need to do a little more research.

Spawn is usually highly nutritional grains such as rye grain and needs to be sterilised before you use it.

Spawn can be fruited on its own but it is generally used to inoculate a 'bulk substrate', for example dung, straw, or coir.  Bulk substrates do not need to be sterilised but need to be pasteurised if you are growing indoors.

If you don't have a PC, your only option is to use BRF cakes which you can fruit as is, or you can spawn it to a bulk substrate.

Oh, I missed the bit where you said "I will be casing with it".  It sounds as though you are confused between 'casing' and 'bulk substrate'.

Bulk substrates are nutritional substrates which you mushrooms grow on.  Examples above.

Casings are layers that you put on top of your substrates to provide moisture to your substrate.  These are non-nutritional layers.  Examples are peat moss and vermiculite.

I think you need to do a lot more research on cultivation methods before you attempt anything.

Is it just me or does that add up to 110%? Not trying to be a jackass.

Well maybe a little.

yes it is 110%.
the original poster didn't say whether it was bulk or not, so please don't assume.
just speculating here, but i think rabbit poo will be less than optimal for mushrooms, but that's purely speculation.
don't use whole brown rice.
