Yard mushroom ID
    #10297014 - 05/06/09 01:38 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I can't seem to get an ID of these mushrooms by using keys.  Perhaps someone here can help me out.  I appreciate your interest and help.  Thanks.

* Habitat (where [woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude] and what [soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?)] does it grow on)
In my backyard, but I don't have a normal yard.  It's almost like a natural jeffrey pine forest duff - lots of decaying needles and cone bits, and dirt, no grass.  They're in a spot that receives some direct sun and some shade.  There's almost no ground cover around - no bushes or shrubs or grasses, just a few large Jeffrey pines and the ground duff.  8000' elevation "high desert" California.
Appeared about a month after the snowpack melted, and a few days after a rainy period.

* Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc
Attached gills (which do not descend down the stem) light brown in color

* Characteristics of the stem (length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
Stem is about as tall as the cap is wide - 5cm, brown/gray, completely hollow and somewhat fibrous, fairly stout looking - over 1cm.  Most aren't really cylindrical - many are almost "flattened."  No signs of a ring.

* Characteristics of the cap (diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
Cap diameter is about 3-6cm when mature, some mature specimens have "undulating" or wavy cap, but most are "shield" type but just slightly wavy, color ranges from brownish gold to dark chocolate of a very old specimen, texture is brittle or crumbly - very difficult to pop off a complete cap by hand without breaking.  Flesh of the cap has a much lighter color - light gray/ light brown / almost cream.

* Spore print color (very important!)
I would have to say "white," although I suppose I could be coaxed into calling it "cream" if I had to.  Certainly not pink or yellow or gray or brown.  (And not dark purple - darn!)

* Color that the mushroom bruises
They don't seem to discolor upon bruising.

* Scent of the mushroom
Um, well, nondescript mushroomy.  Kinda smells like a plain mushroom, and kinda smells like dirt.

* Anything else you might find important
The base of the stem is noticably more stout than the rest (bulbous?) but there are certainly no signs of a 'vulva.'
There are a few close groups - more than a dozen specimens in a square foot or two, but I haven't noticed any other patches.
Growing from a thick white mycelium mat under the ground surface, which is not visible without excavating.
Oh yeah - it looked like some critter took a couple bites from a few caps, but left most of them intact.  Or maybe this was just damage from a falling branch or something.

Well that's about all I can say about these mushrooms.  I apologize for not having any photos.  If they are necessary for this ID, I can try to borrow a camera, I suppose.  Thanks again!

Might be a clitocybe, maybe this, http://www.mushroomexpert.com/ampulloclitocybe_clavipes.html, might be something else.

Thanks, falcon, for pointing me in the right direction.  I'm kinda leaning toward the ID of Clitocybe glacialis.  Here's a pic that looks very similar to those ones that were in my yard (they're all shriveled up now.)

Thanks again.  Oh, and that genus name just cracks me up.  Now that I think of it, it's a pretty funny combo of genus and species names.  Cheers!

C. glacialis fruits only in the areas that have melting snow.  Its extremely common near the edges of glaciers.  You won't find it anywhere else though, you probably have some other Clitocybe.

It's a shame I didn't take any photos before the fruit shriveled up.  Thanks for your help.  The stems looked very much like in this photo:
http://www.mushroomexpert.com/images/kuo2/clitocybe_sclerotoidea_03.jpg
but they don't really match the rest of the descriptions for the sclerotoidea species.
I certainly don't have a glacier in my yard, but I do have 2-4 foot snowpack for about 4-5 months.  Not long after the snowpack had melted in the area where the mushrooms eventually appeared, we had a couple weeks of cold rainy weather with one or two nights of new snow which quickly melted.

Next year I'll take some pics if they reappear.  In the mean time I'll be looking for more mushrooms around my neck of the woods.  Thanks again!

A tiny bit more info...whether or not it's useful or interesting:

Today I found a little (5cm) depression in the decaying pine needles a few feet from the now shriveled mushrooms.  My eye was drawn to it because it looked like somebody had painted a circle with a white spray paint can.  Sure enough, in the middle was the same type of stem, but fresh and ripped off and no sign of cap bits laying around.  So, some creature seems to like eating this mushroom enough to not leave any crumbs.  Anyway, if you've read this far, thanks for listening, and...

Happy hunting!
