cakes
    #1029020 - 11/06/02 04:59 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

this may be a really stupid question but I am new and sorry for posting so much (I'm sure there will be many more) but I really appreciate everyone's help. The way my jars look now (dry, flour looks like sand, flows around when I pick the jars up) they seem very dry. I am visualizing taking the cakes out whenever (hopefully soon) they are ready. IT seems like the cake will just fall apart or like flow out to not even be a cake. Is this because they are dry (is that ease of movement of the flour normal?) or does the mycelium hold the ingredients together.

Actually that sounds really dry to me. Probably not what you wanted to hear. What were the amounts of the ingredents in the mixture you used?

I've compared it with other pics and it looks a little dry. The water I added was hot so some might have evaporated. I mixed 2/3 verm and 1/4 water and 1/4 brf times 6 for 6 jars. Since I wasn't packing it was enough for 8 or nine. what should I do? I hat to waste those spores.

try mixing each jars rations sepperate,,6 jars mix up 6 batches,,takes longer but allows for even mixing, and accurate amounts.

I was going to do that but I always ended up with extra. Should I mix enough for 1 in the bowl -fill- and then toss the rest and start with a new ratio?

Also is anything salvagable?

In reply to:

The two PF recipies are a tad different that what you used. The classic is 1/2 - 2/3 cup verm, 1/8 cup brf, and a little less than 1/4 cup water.

The updated is 1/2 cup of verm, 1/4 cup brf, and 1/4 cup of water. Perhaps you used too much vermiculite?

Sounds as if you need more water regardless.

If I just keep adding though, won't that end up throwing off the ratio?

If you put everything in one bowl you'll be ok.
Just start with the right ratio's to begin with and be sure to mix it all evenly.

If I mix enough up for 6 though (like I did before) in one bowl. It ends up being enough for 8 or nine jars. The ratio per jar is all off then. Some people suggested doing it jar for jar. Is that the best way? I'm only so concerned with it because the humididty is so dry and I want to get it right the second time around. I think I will just mix 1/2 cup verm 1/4 cup brf and 1/4 cup water in a bowl. fill jar and dump leftovers. Start new mixture of 1/2, 1/4, and 1/4 so I know the ratio is correct for each jar. Let me know your ideas.

Mix all your substrate at once, then fill the jars. If you have anything left over, chuck it in the shitcan. The materials are cheap, so fuck it. Good luck.
