collapsed lung
    #10285757 - 05/04/09 07:01 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Has anyone had, or know anyone who has had a collapsed lung from smoking pot?

I had interesting incedent last week, I was in the hospital for a collapsed lung. It happened sunday, april 26 when i took my first bong hit in the morning of some herb. Up till then it had been about 11 years since i had gone more than a day without smoking pot, im 24 years old, i haven't taken a puff since this all happened. I told the Dr's how it happened and none of them said the pot definitely caused it, i was actually told that collapsed lungs are somewhat more common among tall skinny people, Im 6' and 130 pounds. Other than smoking everyday i consider myself pretty heathly, I walk to school everday, I skateboard, I hike most weekends, and i dont smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol except for a few beers now and then. Since all this i've heard through the grapevine of two others this has happened to.

I'm just curious if anyone has had or knows of someone with similiar experiences.

Dude, what the fuck?
I ... I cannot imagine that the pressure differential you create to draw smoke through a bong is enough to collapse a lung.
What exactly happened? At what point did you know your lung was collapsed / that something was wrong?

Sometimes, very tall, thin people are prone to a spontaneous pneumothorax. In this condition, the lung collapses after minimal or no trauma. Other risk factors are cigarette smoking and recreational drug use or abuse.

Spontaneous pneumothorax

    * This refers to a condition in which the lung collapses with no apparent injury or trauma.

    * Abnormal, small, air-filled sacs in the lung called "blebs" typically rupture and leak air into the pleural space, leading to the spontaneous pneumothorax. This happens in the cases of tall and thin people, who because of the shape of their lungs and chest cavity, are seemingly more prone to these defects.

    * Shortness of breath and sharp, stabbing chest pain develop in apparently healthy people.

    * Cigarette smokers are at greater risk for spontaneous pneumothorax.

    * Recreational drug users who inhale deeply and forcefully are also at greater risk.

http://www.emedicinehealth.com/collapsed_lung/page2_em.htm

its your tobacco and drug use, combined w/ your physique.

I know someone who has kind of a chronic spontaneous pneumothorax problem. She's not tall but she's skinny. Doesnt smoke anything tho, shes really into fitness.

edit: my bad, you said you dont smoke cigs

I knew something was wrong instantly because when i blew out the toke it felt i didn't exhale comepletely and i couldn't take full deep breathes, only shallow breathes, it seemed as if it were a asthma attack or something (i dont have asthma). I have a good friend who was nurse for about ten years, shes herb-friendly too. I went to her house later in the day after it happened and she listened to my chest with a stethoscope and said there was a difference in sound between my lungs when i breathed, she suggested that i had partial collapsed lung and to get it checked out. she also said that the docs would probably just tell me to take it easy and not do any heavey exercising. I got sick that same night and puked out everything in my digestive system, the next day i was so weak and tired i didn't make doctor appointent and layed on the couch. I went to a walk-in clinic two days after it happened expecting what my friend told me and they sent to the ER becuase my lung was the size of my fist.

Its amazing how quickly things change.

Im gonna take a break from THC for awhile, when i do decide to get back into it ill probably start eating green-butter and see how that treats me, then maybe ill smoke if i feel the need, although not like i used to (all day, everyday).

Topcorn:

What MrBump posted was correct. Tall Skinny people seem to be prone to spontaneous pneumothorax (a collapsed lung with air leak into the chest). What most likely happened was the quick increase in pressure from sucking in a bong hit burst one of the tiny airsacs (called alveoli) that allowed air into the chest cavity. It's not the pot itself per se so much as it is smoking and the style of smoking with quick bursts of pressure from sucking in a bong hit quickly.

Depending on how bad the pneumothorax is the doctors will sometimes let it resolve on it's own and the air will be reabsorbed. Othertimes it can become what's called a Tension Pneumothorax where air pressure builds up in the chest cavity compressing the healthy lung and deviating the trachea to the nonaffected side. Listening with a stethoscope was a good idea and key to monitor the progress of the pneumothorax and make sure it didn't progress to something worse. You're good to have monitored it.

If this has happened once to you it is more likely to happen again than the average person of your same stature. Be careful with your lungs. Smoking in general isn't bad but nobody listens to that, smoke in less stressful ways if you're going to smoke (ie. no more bongs).

thanks for all the info!

thats pretty much what i figured was the case. All this does make me scared to start smoking at all again because i generally cough alot however i smoke, but especially from bongs. I was let out of the hospital even though i had some residual pneumothorax, they said it should clear itself up though.

I'll probably invest in a good vaporizer in the future to smoke, but I'll just let time takes it course for now!

yes i had it. its quite common really, especially if your skiny, male and long. Most of them heal by themselves.

it usually happens when you are resting your body. no idea why. sure fucking hurts though. makes you realise how small the world gets, when you only have 1 functional lung.

He is just barely underweight.  At 6', 136 lbs to 184 lbs is normal.  He could definitely stand to gain 10 lbs, but he is not in the WAY unhealthy zone.

my fiancee is 5'6 and 130lbs and she is small. i cant fathom her being stretched 6 inches taller and being healthy.  where are you getting that 136lbs is normal at 6' tall?

One of my friends' lung collapsed when he was hitting a bong.... But that bong was like 4 feet long and he smoked 2 packs of menthols a day.

If the doctor's didn't flash onto the pot right away as the reason, I'd say your lung might have collapsed randomly. Like a fluke or something. Or it could have been the bong itself, which is a really unhealthy way of smoking. It puts a lot of pressure on your lungs, for real. Switch to a bubbler.

Edit: You're 6 feet and 130, that could be it too. I'm 6 feet and a couple years ago my weight dropped to 125 and I got a heart murmur, out of the blue. It's gone away since, but being seriously underweight like that will fuck up your cardiovascular system.

You'd be really surprised. When you're at the low end, ESPECIALLY when your tall, your heart and lungs have to work SO hard to pump everything to the right places. I saw serious health problems when my bmi was only 17 (normal is 18-25). I didn't think I was in the "WAY unhealthy zone" either, until my heart stopped beating right one day. The body is a delicate system.

thanks for all the input again. I realize these posts are a few days old, i just haven't been on here to check it.

Anyway i went to a thoratic surgeon/specialist today because the hospital dr's recommended it, they basically told me what i already expected. Like everyone says, spontaneous pneumothorax is especially common among tall thin males for some unknown reason. It could be that the connective tissue abnormality and lung weak spots (blebs) are a genetic thing, but dr's dont really know. They said that i now have about a 20% chance of it happening again without smoking, and obviously smoking of any kind increases that chance.

Its funny when people tell me that my weight is unhealthy, Duh, its pretty obvious to me that my height/weight ratio is not normal, but unless your a tall skinny twig like me with high metabolism you dont know how hard it is to gain weight and keep it, short of taking protein supplements everyday and working out. Maybe i should put more thought into that though.

Tall skinny people such like yourself (especially those prone to pneumothorax) usually have some metabolic/genetic reasons for how they are. Short of losing your thyroid it is going to be very hard to gain much weight. You can gain some, but it won't be spectacular.
