Thin layer of paver sand then river pebbles or whatever rocks I have in the yard. I don't like aquarium rocks because they are expensive, but if you can afford it they are good.

What is the point exactly of having the rocks? (Forgive my noobishness.)

I use them as ground cover on my cacti because it makes it easier to water without disturbing the soil and provides a nice barrier to insects / fungus forming on the top layer.

I like riverstones and pea gravel for tropical plants. Limestone, crushed granite or coarse sand for succulents. I've put pea gravel and river rock on succulents, but dont like the way it looks because it makes no sense

i use 100% all the way through, no top dressing/ground cover. i always find it a pain to tell the soils moisture contents in potted plants with it. outside i used to use mulches, but i find it all pointless except for aesthetics. now i jsut turned my garden into a natural type, and all the prunings/dead leaves etc get thrown back onto the dirt to get eaten and shit out. never had such a happy garden, and have yet to fertilize anything no potted in over 3 years now.

I dont like to put gravel in with my container cacti, just plain cacti soil with added perlite.
I have a large cacti area outside that the cacti are planted in the ground, I put river stone around to help with weeds, all my container cacti i just use plain cacti soil...no rocks on top.
As long as you let the soil dry out between watering then IME you dont need gravel/stones/etc in with potted cacti.
