I got a Loph!
    #10276317 - 05/03/09 12:56 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

So I finally managed to get a Loph. Williamsii!

It's a sucky picture, I know, but I'll get a better one soon!

That's it for right now, I don't know if you can tell, but my dog tried to take a nip out of it, he didn't like the taste, thank goodness. But I expect a full recovery and hopefully some flowers this year!

Nice. Looks big enough to flower. Mine started to flower a week after i planted it. Thank god my animals don't like my plants. It seems to be a common problem here. Good luck and enjoy.

Here's a MUCH better picture of my little lophophora.

(again, link to photobucket)

The dog bite is clearly visible, but the damage isn't too severe. I expect a full recovery and hopefully some flowering this year.

That soil mix looks like it contains a lot of large pieces of wood, I would change it up, add perlite or paver sand something like that.

The bite isn't too bad it will heal.

I'll pick out as many of the sticks as I can, it's a cactus mix, so I have some faith in it.

I'm definitely going to keep an eye on it, monitor it's condition, but I'm sure it will be fine. How should I add perlite? Just take the plant out and mix in some perlite?

Ya, but even if it's a cactus mix, a lot of soil brands have rotting wood chips in 'em. That robs nitrogen and brings in nasty pests.

Ya, but mix in some grit with the perlite. Get some coarse sand (not the kind used in sand boxes) and add that with perlite.

it looks OK.
keep a close eye on the wound though.

i guess it was bare root when you got it?
so it has already suffered some shock from that...
did you water it right away after potting it? (remember i am theorising here)

digging it back up again and changing the soil may not be the best thing to do in this case, i would leave it alone a while before changing the soil.
when you do repot it, try to make the soil level a bit lower so that some root is showing above, and top off with grit so that there is no wet soil hanging around the green tissue.

It was bare root when I got it and I did water it right after potting it, but I didn't drown it, I just gave it a good misting. When I repot it I'll make sure to put the layer of grit down.
