PC Troubles First Time

I decided to testout my new 8qt PC and loaded it with 4 pint jars- Added enough water so there was about 1/2"-1" of standing water and put the lid on. I then placed the 15psi weight on top and turned it on high- After a roaring boil developed some steam and water came out fo the handle and the over pressure red-valve stayed slightly open but the weight never jiggles or rocked- what's up?? Oh and the BRF jars i did just for kicks, are those ok now? I mean they sat in a pot of boiling water and steam for like 45 minutes, there is some moisture at the top of the jar (but not the brf itself) where there is space Anyways, I need to know whats up with my PC as I have supplies comming today or tomorrow and it will be needed Thanks- Cam

steam shouldn't be coming out of the red pressure release valve. sounds like you may have over-pressurized or the pressure release valve wasn't in tight to begin with. also you shouldn't have too much steam coming out at the handle. is this a new cooker? is the seal okay?

Yes new cooker and Yes seal is fine I dont really understand either- It's a MIRRO 8 qt Anyone familiar with it? The red-valve comes up and down pretty easily and there was steam comming out of the handle the whole time This was all done yesterday and today I opened it to check the vent tube iadn its clear, I can see straight through it

was it this one?

that's the one my friend has. the red valve is an over-pressure release valve. it shouldn't allow any steam out unless the pot is over-pressurized. see if you can push it back in so it remains tight. if not, the valve or the pot may need replaced. if you've got significant steam coming out of the red valve, that's probably the problem.

Alright now Im confused- I pushed the red Over-pressure valve so its tight and there is steam comming through the pressure valve but theres also steam comming out of the handle, and the lift pin isnt setting - I think the reason the weight isnt moving is because of the steam comming out of the handle, but everything is new and in good condition, I checked My pressure cooker is just like that one only its got two short handles and circle 5 - 10 - 15 psi wight that sits on top of the pressure valve Someone please help, I've got grain and brf jars waiting

I had the same prob with my 6qt pc, even though the seal looked ok. Took it back to walmart and exchanged it. Works fine and haven't had a problem since. And to answer your question about your test jars: you can't be sure that the pressure remained constant for the entire boil if the weight didn't swivel so therefore you can't gaurentee 100% sterility, so what I would do is either resterilize or wait a few days before innocing to see if any contams are present.
