Which species of mushrooms mostly grow from wood?
    #10270742 - 05/01/09 09:11 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Hi, I found a mushroom today growing from a tree. I dont have a camera with me so ive been researching to find out what it could be. its got the orange brownish look of a gymnopilus and I see that most of those grow directly from wood. the cap feels soft silky which i think is caused by the small brown fibers on it in an outward type pattern. it gets dark brown towards the center. the cap is wavy and the center sinks inward...the underside of the cap is white but not really gills like most mushrooms...it kind of just has pores in it...not evenly. small stipe but mostly even. some brown fiberous on this as well. if anyone can give me some direction id appreciate.

Sounds like he's describing a hedgehog or a bolete to me...

Man. Wait for a trusted identifier to chime-in, but even without pictures it's very difficult.
I'm sure they can guess, and you can google for images of their guesses.

Don't eat it!

Check out the first and second picture posted by Rabidbaboon in this thread, http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10270669, do they look like that?

well, my mushroom is a lot smaller, the edges curve down and gets dark brown around the edges...the center is dark brown. in the second picture of that post, i cant really tell if the underside of that mushroom resembles mine, just know they are both white.

but the pattern looks similar

yes, my mushroom might be young. im fairly sure now its some kind of polyporus. either brumalis or arcularius. it looks very similar to the mushrooms in the top right hand corner of this picture..
