ID Request - Whangarei, New Zealand SPORE PRINT ADDED
    #10247448 - 04/28/09 03:03 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

Hi there, I found these mushrooms growing in my garden and im unsure of what they could be. There are literally HUNDREDS of these in my garden

They are only at max 75mm tall, caps 1.5-3cm. The caps are also slightly transparent when in the ground fresh, but after they have been picked after a couple of minutes the caps start to change to a light brown NON-transparent non-shiny colour. They did not bruise any  colour at all.

Please view the images in full size.

It would be great if someone could ID these for me.

Thanks

I am not too familiar with the flip side fungi, but they do have some looks of a Psilocybe. The close up shot of the gills look like the spore print will come out light colored, however. Plus the absence of any bluing makes me skeptic, too.
Please take a spore print.

hmm they do kind of look like a psilocybe, but i cannot see any bruising. may well be a deadly galerina. wait for a trusted id to make sure.

Hey iNDUCT, I can't tell you the name of those mushrooms but can tell you they are inactive. I have seen them when out and about in the past myself

Are you sure there was no blue bruising?
Your mushrooms resemble these mushrooms.

I first found this species in potted plants in a plant nursery in the Auckland area in 2005.
After much study I am almost certain that it is Psilocybe moravica var moravica which was first described from the Czech Republic by Jan Borovicka, this is a bluing hallucinogenic Psilocybe species belonging in stirps Serbica, section Cyanescens.

edit, Sorry, Section Semilanceatae, Stirps Serbica.

I wouldn't be so quick with this judgement. Let's wait for the spore print. I have now changed my mind as to it most likely being light colored and would almost put money on them being a Psilocybe species.
I thought they looked somewhat familiar to something I'd seen on here in the past. And then inski posted his (suspected) Psilocybe moravica pics. :smile2:

The spore deposit will be a purple/brown colour and if you cut the stipe it will bruise blue within half an hour!
Here are some more images for you to compare!

This is a significant find INDUCT, you should make lots of images!

I can definitely see the resemblance. Especially in the younger specimen.

They look like Psilocybes to me.  Is the ring in pic # 4 blue?

See if you can bruise them and get them to turn blue, or at least take some more pics, those look really cool.

I haven't noticed that previously, but now that you mention it, certainly looks like it.

I concur. I wish they'd be growing in my back yard.

The rings in #4 are DEFINITELY blue!

Also, the spores are purple/brown, maybe with a little tinge of red.
Look at the spores on the cap underlying the largest in the cluster of 3:

It is also my experience that the bluing is much more noticeable after the hygrophanous stage, and the mushroom has lost its slippery, wet, translucence.  In this photo I have circled the areas which look like they might be very subtly bluing, and will be more obviously blue after they've gone opaque.

Also, I can still NOT get any bruising at all???!! weird...

Can you take some more pics?

I am sure it's an active Psilocybe.
Please do take a picture. Also, would it be possible for you and would you be willing to send a spore print in a letter in the mail? I am extremely interested in working with it and would be willing to send parts of it on to some of the mycologists here if they'd like to take a look at the spores under a microscope.

With subtly bluing species, you don't want to actually damage the tissue, as this tends to darken the colour overall, and make the colour more difficult to distinguish.  Don't prod, crush, or scrape it, just let them do their thing and observe.

Leave them alone.  Post photos once the caps have changed to a light, opaque colour, and we'll see if we can point the bluing out to you.

I must admit that I did think they looked familiar, but without a print I didnt want to give a false id. I didnt notice any bruising also until CureCat so kindly pointed it out. If the spore print is what iNDUCT says it is, then it is more than likely a Psilocybe
