question about substrates
    #10238937 - 04/26/09 08:28 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

hey shroomery.  if i were to take a single BRF cake and spawn it to some coir, could i wait for the coir to colonize and then use that as colonized substrate to spawn into a monotub? would that work or do you need to use an actual substrate like wbs or grain to use to spawn to a monotub.

i ask this because i have a few good extra  chunks of mycellium i could throw into a bucket of coir and then use that as spawn to a monotub without having to inoculate anything else and start over.

You mean spawn to even more coir later?  Yes you can, but why don't you just spawn to the amount of coir you need in the first place?

i dont know i guess i could but i would think the pinset would be fucked if i just threw a little bit of colonized substrate into a shitload of spawn.

i would spawn to straight coir at first to get the desired 6 quarts of colonized substrate for a monotub...

then i would spawn all of that to coir/peat/oyster  in the tub and case

What you are talking about is called 'super spawning' ... it can work .. but is also dangerous from a contamination standpoint.

Your coir spawn will not have the nutrients that your original cake had (from the brown rice flour) .... that is why cultivators use grain as spawn and a decent spawn to bulk substrate ratio.

When you add uncolonized grain or grain flour to your bulk substrate (to get the nutrients up) is where a lot of the contamination danger enters.

I haven't done 'super spawning' .... just heard about it ... so I am talking out of my ass ... but I think this is the concern.

edit:  just read your above post .... peat is used as an ingredient in casing layers (like 50/50 peat and vermiculite) .... not really used as a bulk substrate that I know of.

Don't use peat/oyster for your bulk sub.  That is a casing material.  Use something like coir/coffee/gypsum or even just coir/gypsum.

Coir+coffee is cheap and easy and effective.
