Cold Tolerance Question
    #10225552 - 04/24/09 11:10 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

Will these things recover from light freezes in a sheltered area?

Calea zacatechichi
Heimia salicifolia
Sweet potatoes, Yams
Psychotria viridis

An Oregonian ethno supplier told me that caapi is very hardy.

Spring has sprung in zone 9, and it was tough getting my planters back outside.

In my area of CA, it usually drops below freezing only a couple times a year, with occasional frosts in between.

I'm pretty sure the Calea will (it is very resilient) and am positive the yams will (I have some at my school and they are now full with leaves again).
Psychotrias are such slow growers and grow in such tropical climates I wouldn't think it could be very expected.
And judging by wikipedia's write up on sinuichi they should come back after top growth is killed in winter.

I know there's two types of sinicuichi, so I can only speak for h. myrtifolia, but mine survived a few frosts.

Heimia is very hardy, caapi is not as hardy as Heimia IMO. Unless when well estabilished, IME it doesn't likes cold, it likes heat and tons of sun.

Definite no on the Psychotria viridis.  It really dislikes the cold.

Durian,

Excellent questions, about cold hardiness. I wish we had more information on this topic.

I live in the Pacific NW, in Zone 8a. In my garden, Sinicuichi survives the winters without a problem.

this is the first year I've planted out Calea z, though I've been assured that it will survive.

Apparently, Psychotria alba will easily survive your temps (though probably die back to the roots), though unfortunately P. viridis won't be able to tolerate them.

I've also heard that caapi will survive, at least the roots.

Any information about the survivable cold hardiness of other plants, such as...

Brugmansia
Iochroma
Salvia divinorum (certainly die back, but will the roots survive?)
Catha edulis
Kratom

?

Calea zacatechichi -- Leaves turn purplish in light freeze. Dies to the roots in hard freeze, comes back in the spring.

Heimia salicifolia -- Dies to the roots in hard freeze, comes back in the spring.

Sweet potatoes, Yams -- If the ground freezes, they rot.

Brugmansia -- Woody portion survives a hard freeze. Looks like burnt match, comes back bigger. Succulent portions of the plant absorb through the skin when fermented.
:hmm:
