Question about cats
    #10215705 - 04/22/09 07:34 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

How can cats sleep but still hear and track everything with their awesome sense of hearing? When I sleep I wouldn't hear a nuclear bomb going off let alone such small noises.

How do you sleep if your constantly hearing things?

Also, how can the cat wake up and take action so quickly if it hears something while it's asleep? I wake up but it takes a bit of time to really wake up and get going.

To bad gumby has me on ignore, he'd probably know the answers to this.

I used to sleep like a log, now I can practically be awoke by someone breathing.

Actually the human sense of hearing does not shut down when you go to sleep. Just because your a deep sleeper doesn't mean your brain doesn't know what's going on around you 24/7.

I sleep ridiculously lightly.

I have to have a fan on or something making white noise in my room or I'll hear random noises to keep me up all night.

I usually get woken up by the fucking birds as soon as it's light outside.

I found this off the internet.

Quote:

Unlike dogs or humans, cats can spend many hours sleeping relatively lightly. If you try to wake that sleeping cat, he can turn immediately from being deep asleep to fully awake in a matter of seconds. You can often see the cat sit with its eyes half closed, or even wide open, enjoying a short nap.

It seems that cats are capable of being light sleepers to an extent that we aren't. Though I have seen my cats wake up and be very groggy for a long time afterwards, so sometimes they do have trouble waking up, just like us.

They have probably evolved through evolution to be light sleepers because unlike humans they have predators. Humans have no natural predators.

Cause they are cats. All there senses are better than ours. I was trained to sleep with my eyes open.

cats don't tend to go to sleep for long periods straight, its usually 30 min - 1 hour intervals rather frequently

There were periods in my life where I would sleep very lightly and awake in a heightened state. Mornings were often started with a sense of panic and urgency.

As for cats: It seems like they can sleep pretty sound if they are raised in the right environment. I had one skiddish cat that would be easily startled at resting moments, while the others could tune out most stimuli.

There's a huge difference between a light 'catnap' and a deep sleep. When my cat goes into a deep sleep I can pick up his paws and wrap them behind his head without waking him up. During a light sleep I can't even get near him without him knowing I'm there.

On the topic, does anyone else have a cat that twitches like crazy whenever they are in a deep sleep? My cat will twitch and chatter his mouth like he's having a seizure, usually to the extent that it wakes him up.

It's f'in halarious!

Oreo. And no, he hates high places. He doesn't even like to be picked up. That's fine though since he's a little over 20 pounds so he's probably absolutely wreck shit if he liked to climb.
