Salvia Divinorum's legalality status changed

I've been keeping up to the legality of saliva in my state (NY) every few months and just discovered that it was just passed as illegal two months ago. PAH! http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?by=k&qs=salvia
Quote:
Subsection 1 of this section states that no person, firm, corporation, partnership, association, limited liability company, or other entity shall possess salvia divinorum, commonly known as salvia within New York state, except as authorized by subdivision three of this section. -02/03/2009
What really pisses me off, is the fking youtubers:
Quote:
JUSTIFICATION: Salvia Divinorum is a powerful psychoactive herb native to Mexico that produces hallucinations, uncontrolled laughter, profuse sweating, eupho- ria, sensations of motion and other effects when smoked or chewed. This herb is currently legal in the State of New York and is widely available for purchase on the Internet. It is not included within the list of controlled substances. Consequently, if a person is caught driving under the influence of this drug he or she would not be eligible for prose- cution for the crime of DUI. Searches of popular video-sharing sites on the Internet revealed dozens of videos showing teenagers and older persons engaged in the usage of Salvia in cars. We must ensure that there is a consequence for persons who emulate the behavior in such videos and who think that ingesting Salvia in cars is acceptable behav- ior. It is of paramount importance to ensure that New York drivers are not impaired by any substances. Regardless of the legality or illegality of Salvia itself, it is acknowledged to be a powerful hallucinogen that will impair drivers and thus endanger our roadways. Therefore, choosing to drive under the influence of Salvia should result in criminal prose- cution. -Taken from second search result in the link provided above first quote. This is in the actual BILL. THANKS ASSHOLES WHO RECORDED YOUR TRIPS AND PUT IT ON YOUTUBE. I CAN'T SMOKE IT LEGALLY BECAUSE OF YOU.
You can search for bills for your state with the simple keyword search on your state's assembly page, like I did in the link. Ohio just made it illegal on april 1st 2009

Still legal in Ottawa
And as illegal as heroine or cocaine in Australia :O

Well seeing as weed is my favorite drug, and it's basically always been illegal, I hardly give a fuck.
Not to mention I don't like salvia, and wouldn't do it out in public anyways. I have but it wasn't gnarly 20x or something like that. I mean its a strong hallucinate, people should be doing it in other people's houses with sitters. If people did it that way it would be pretty hard for the police to make any arrests.

You can blame the Youtubers all you want, but the fact remains that the bill passed without you even knowing and you didn't stand up for it.
It is misguided to blame the people who make videos of their trips, it is the ignorant people who are getting elected, making the laws, and the ones who stand by and do nothing to stand up for salvia or any other plant for that matter, who all share responsibility.
It may take a lot of effort, but anyone with real interest and conviction CAN stand up to the system. The ayahuasca churches are getting their rights recognized...the peyote way church did. In any state where the criminalization of salvia was proposed, and actually resisted in congress, the bill was either dropped or amended to restriction to adults.

If you look at the NYS site many bills are pending but from what I can see none have passed both houses and been signed in to law yet.

I hate to ask but what justification does the OP have to stand up to the bill? Beyond saying 'omfg I wanna trip on a legal substance and not be breaking the law' wtf does he have? Nothing. The only people that have a leg to stand on are the ones that are looking for a religious/spiritual experience. Face it, people who come here are in the minority. It's just how it is. At least(probably more) 50% of the US people are unenlightened retarded sheep that can be scared into believing anything.
Don't get me wrong, I dont think it should be illegal, I don't think any drugs should be illegal. Monitored, regulated, taxed, distributed to tax paying citizens, free of cut/harmful chems, sure I'm all for it. IMO, treat it like alcohol, all of them. The only difference is now you have will have to become a criminal to trip. It sucks, I know. Welcome to the DMT user's world.
