Phone Book Oyster Grow
    #10186049 - 04/17/09 05:12 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I am fruiting Oysters now on a phone book just outside my apartment door.  I don't know what kind they are, so your opinions are welcome.

I inoculated with 1 quart of wheat spawn, colonized from supermarket oyster tissue. The bag the phone book came in was cut open along the spine and was cooked in a pan of water in the oven at 170F for 1 1/2 hrs.

Swelled with water, the spine split.  No holes were drilled in the phone book and nothing else done to help the mycelium colonize.

When cool, the spine was opened at the middle and all the grain spawn was dumped in as a single unit, and packed a bit. The open edge was loosely covered with plastic food wrap and this is how it looked in about 4 days:

7 Days.  Notice how the mycelium that was formerly reaching out has now consolidated.

Three weeks: pinning. I moved these outside into my RV, and killed them with the low humidity.  They dried out.

I soaked the book overnight in water, and put it outside by my apartment door, in a huge glass bowl covered by a tea towel which I mist three times a day to keep damp.

It pinned again, and is fruiting, but they are so far very small, and dark.  It has been a cold spring for here on South Vancouver Island,  nights about 40F days about 50F.

More as things develop.

Looking nice. The skewers are to hold up the humidity tent, correct?

Those are Pleurotus Ostreatus var. Columbinus  (blue oysters).  The colder it is the bluer they will be.  Keep misting them and they will turn out nice.

Evolution is Lamarckism in disguise.  Adaptation never creates a new species or trait, but rather the new species/trait always existed within the parent DNA until circumstances allowed it to be activated.  For instance, every wolf has the DNA for poodles, but that DNA would never be revealed without man selectively breeding for it.

Nw: There's a towel over them and it's on a third floor walk-up balcony.  Nobody comes up here.

Buckeye:  Thanks for the ID. I was wondering.....
