HELP my morning glories!
    #10130772 - 04/08/09 03:09 PM (15 years, 11 days ago)

My morning glory is in flowering right now and suddenly the leaves have started to turn yellow! all the foliage above that area in the photo is still nice and green, but the yellow is sort of making its way up the plant.

i thought maybe its because the pot is too small?

but then if i have to transplant, i'll have to cut a good amount of the root ball because the pot is oddly shaped. will this hurt the flowering process if i cut roots to transplant?

I really want this MG to finish flowering as it will be my first plant ever to flower.

It's probably root bound in that pot and it is causing the lower leaves to fall. As long as it is older growth it will be fine, depending on your climate those morning glories may be more than annuals though, get it in a bigger pot with some good nutrients.

i have a new pot for it, i just need to know whether its okay to re-pot it while its flowering as i will have to cut a good amount of its roots off.

as you can see the pot is oddly shaped and i thought it would be adequate for it to grow in until it dies of old age or something.

As long as you don't kill off all the roots you will be fine, just don't water for a few days to avoid rot.

Go ahead and repot it. It needs something more adequate to climb onto. Get a trellis or something. If you put it in Miracle Gro soil, you won't need to fert but once a month as long as its in a pot.

It's probably root bound in that pot-they'll grow in pots but they like to shoot off runners under the ground. I discovered this when I tried to transplant some from one fence to another.

Not sure where you live but if you go ahead and pout it in the ground, it may come back year after year. Where I live many people consider them a nuisance because once planted, they never go away. We've still got some growing horizontally across the ground in our back yard from moving their fence 2 years ago!

Ours usually get yellow and even brown all over the leaves...we just let them grow wild over a fence, and trail back down once they reach the top. They still flower. Don't freak out, it's not a hard plant to grow.

I would almost recommend just putting more seeds in the ground rather than trying to transplant this one, if all cold weather is over.

Morning glory must spread its roots and becomes rootbound quite quickly, even in larger pots.

your problem could also be iron or nitrogen deficiency. Give it some room, so nutrients, and it should be good to go

They don't come back every year. They are annuals. However, some of the seeds will obviously germ the following Spring. Just thought I'd clarify.

They can grow on just about anything. Before you know it that palm will no longer be visible under the masses of morning glory

They are fun to watch. Great plant for those who want to notice quick results; these things seem to grow an inch every hour or so

Odd, I had been under the impression some were not annuals, or at least it's how I had heard it from some, I'm not a big fan of growing anything in the Ipomea family.

At my old house, I had a large clump that came back every year
All of the foliage and succulent growth would die off in winter, then in spring new growth would occur from the woody stems close to the soil.

I have to put them out every year. They are labeled as annuals. Maybe if you live in zones where you don't get many hard freezes they will come back

I think that may be the case. Although the area I lived in was zone 8a, and did freeze, the vines I had were very well established in massive, thick clumps, so this may have protected the roots from freeze damage.
But I have also had many plants that did unpredictable things, and at times defied the laws of their nature
