You don't *need* a Passport until June 19, 2009. You either have to have a passport OR your bithcert and a drivers license.
Take it from me, i'm 20 minutes from the border, and have crossed MANY times.

As of this year you need a passport to cross the border, I just got mine renewed. I live in Canada though, but I think it is the same for both.

to get back and forth to quebec you do well at least at the crossing I use and if I known other wise I would have used a differnt crossing
