You do know all the laws changed right? You can't easily claim bankruptcy anymore, and this debt will follow you forever. The CC companies have a nice scam going, and you are about to willingly hop in.
Keep the debit card and live within your means. If you want more, earn more.

I think it's sort of true. The rules are all goofy. I think they look for specific red flags, and tons of credit checks are one of them.
Same goes for any outstanding debt you already have, missed payments, etc.
You generally need to get a low limit credit card, use it for a few months and make sure you pay it in full every month. Soon enough, they will offer you a huge limit and the trap is set.

People can "get by" with shitty credit, but it'll probably affect you more then you realize.
Nearly every Apartment complex I've lived in has checked my credit. You will have serious issues securing a house/mortgage with bad credit, a car, any type of loan etc. etc. All this can haunt you for a significant amount of time.
If you have bad credit, plan on living "hood rich" the rest of your life.

Good luck paying that $1000 back plus 33% interest, late fees and penalties.

you can get some credit. not much probably, but if you can show proof of income and been with the same company for awhile your chances increase.

There are lots of introductory cards. With NO credit, you should be able to get a card. It'll just have a modest line of credit.
After 6 months to a year, you usually can get a credit increase. If you are very disciplined and can pay the balance off in full each and every month, move on to a "rewards" card. I make about $700 year just for using my card to pay for things I would have needed anyway (rent food, utilities etc).

For the moron who thinks he won't owe around $4,000 in 7 years...
Quote:
The 7 years your speaking of is only when no activity has occurred on a reported account. There is no statue of limitation on debts you owe. If a creditor listed a debt/collection then went out of business then after 7 years it would purge, however all a creditor has to do is update th bureaus once every 7 years and it will be there forever.
AND
You still owe that bad debt, it is not completely gone. Creditors can no longer legally harass you regarding the bad debt after 7 years.
Have fun buying a new car!

Think long and hard about jumping into a credit situation... Life is LOOOOONG, and someday the decisions you make will come back to fuck you... or help you.
Choose wisely.

FUCK LOANS. and FUCK CREDIT CARDS, do not go do that.
The only loan I got was $50,000 Australian @ 5.7% interest for 10 acres of really nice land out rural.
$240/month interest only, $60 a week I can pull out of my ass no problem, even when I'm not working.
It's an asset, it has value, plus the interest is reasonable. I pay at least $100 a week, you never want to pay interest only on anything other then investments.
Can't wait to live on it the dream is within my reach.
Have power and water (no sewerage, will run on septic), now I just need a badass trailer/caravan that has a shower/toilet (really nice ones running about $30k Australian) and planet Chubba will be in business.
God I hate paying $200 week/$10k a year to some douchebag so he can pay off his $300k loan... its like flushing money down the toilet, nothing to show for it.

your're better off getting a 3-5grand personal loan and paying a yearly interest rate unstead of a monthly rate
most credit cards charge monthly that i know of so a 3yr fixed loan with the same interest rate exept yearly is better for you plus you get a good credit rating after you finish paying off the loan in the long term
unless you can find a credit card that pays cash as a reward for spending so much cash...
