Finally got the damn incubator going.
    #1011908 - 10/31/02 11:49 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

After studying various poultry, reptial and spawn incubators, it is now figured it out. $10 wal-mart heater, rubbermaid toat and a wafer thermostat. Maintains the temp very well. some insulation would be nice, so it didn't have to work as much, but it worked out well. Also, the mechanics are mounted in the top airspace so it dosn't take up any room on the bottom. along with shipping and some hardware i'd say it was under $40.

It was similar to this one. i couldn't find the exact model. I picked the setup that most closely resembled the incubator i was copying from.

fyi, most people avoid using fan heaters for these reasons:
1. they are big
2. they blow contams around
3. they produce a very dry heat
4. they use a lot of energy

In reply to:

digital temp gauge w/ external wire probe

i made the internal temp probe external.. by unsoldering the diode inside by opening it up and using wire to extend it...

the wire i used what the external temp probe (which is about 10') and cut it in half.... deslodered the wire on pcb and soldered the external probe back onto pcb... and then with the 5' segment i solder the diode to one end and soldered the other end to the internal temp pcb stops where the diode originally used to be... some electrical tape or epoxy glue to make water tight... (i used heat shrink tubes)... then go buck wild....

i also made is so i would only have to jack in using mono plugs (they look like the headphone jack and input).... i posted what i did with pics on a post... i dun want to find it now.. bleh.. sorry

In reply to:

1. they are big

It isn't any bigger than the system in the poultry incubator it is based on.
In reply to:

2. they blow contams around

I'm using polyfill and keeping the system clean, so it should work. The fan is adjustable speed and only on when the heater is.
In reply to:

3. they produce a very dry heat

I'm using replacement wicks for the poultry incubator.
In reply to:

4. they use a lot of energy

True, but it will only be on then the thermostat requires it, so theoretically the same ammount of heat will be produced as any other device.
