Should I birth these....
    #10109791 - 04/05/09 10:44 AM (15 years, 14 days ago)

Ok 1st time grow, PF tek using BRF with Flax seed meal and nutritional yeast.  About 2 weeks since inoculation.  The myc. is very uneven, thick in some spots but thinner in others. The needle wasn't long enough to reach very far into the jars, just below the dry verm. layer. The cakes have started to shrink, there is quite a bit of condensation inside the jars, and I don't know if you ca pic it up in these pics but the myc. has started to get some pale yellow discoloration in some spots, doesn't appear to be contaminates but they don't appear to be getting any further progress in myc. growth.  The holes in the jar lids are not covered.  Temp is 78 or so in the incubation container.  Any input greatly appreciated.  Thanks....

I dont think these are ready just yet. The yellowing is probably just metabolites from the condesation.

the third pic looks contaminated or is it just me?

and the yellow is produced from mycelium metabolism

No don't birth them, the yellowing is known as RRs most unfavorite term "Myc Piss" or otherwise known as the releasing of metabolites from the mycelium on the uncolonized substrate. This is a preventitive measure for the mycelium to attempt to keep the substrate it will be colonizing free of contaminates. In your jars it will look yellow/ rusty orange color on the uncolonzied brf itself.

The Myc in your jar looks healthy from what I can see, and 2 weeks along it shouldn't  be any farther then what it looks like it is.

Give it another 2 weeks to fill out, BRF is supposed to take about 30 days give or take based on if you use Multispore inoculation or a Liquid culture/grain to grain ect.

Point is, don't birth your jars, they are doing just fine, let the myc fill out the jar and once it is completely colonized visibly from the outside, give it another 2 or 3 days to colonize the middle.

If colonization speeds slow, try flipping the jars upside down or providing better gas exchange for the mcyelium to spread.

As for now, just play the waiting game and let the jars finish, if they got this far without fail, they likely will be fine. The yellow discolorization is just myc being myc, so no worries.

If you suspect something else funky, open the jars a crack or sniff where you have hole in the jar to see if it smells funky or like mushrooms.

Hope that helps, and just be patient/read up for the next step in the process, it isn't far away.

Condensation is completely normal, it's the bacteria he has to worry about in the jars.
