To Supplement or Not - Look at the Difference
    #10106450 - 04/04/09 06:11 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I made spawned two batches of blue oyster to wood chips / sawdust, using about 10% spawn rate.  One bag I supplemented with 20% wheat bran, the other I did not.  Look at the difference after 10 days.

I guess I should have done a second control where I did not use any supplement, but used a higher spawn rate (say 25%).

That's why we recommend supplementation.  It feeds the mycelium as it colonizes the sawdust.  If you're using a high grain spawn ratio, you can cut down on the wheat bran, but it still helps to use around 10% or so.

Which is which?  It sounds like the one with wheat bran is the one on the left?
