I read Dead People

It appears that dead philosophical authors generally carry more weight than live ones.

A recent example - Terence McKenna's popularity seems to be swelling.

Why do you think a dead man's words ofttimes carry more weight than a live one? Is it because that is all we have left of there having been here? The fact that nothing further will be uttered so whatever works they have written become more precious? Or perhaps even some mythic quantity that gets added with the passage of time...

I suppose that has more to do with the fact that there are more dead philosophers than live ones.  I actually would consider myself an exception to the rule in this regard, as my favorite philosopher, Ken Wilber, is alive and well(and in great shape).

It's not just philosophy, it's the same in art in music and many other places Im sure...for example there's very few people who would hold any single contemporary composer in the same regard as Beethoven or Stravinsky or even a lesser dead genius such as Shostakovich or Poulenc. As you say something happens to the public perception of people when they die, they become validated in a way the living cannot, and as you say the myth develops; and it's also maybe partly because they can no longer screw up any positive perception of themselves, as they're no longer a mere mortal who eats shits and dies like everyone else.

I believe it is because we love to discuss the meaning of art and philosophy... and if someone is still alive, they can turn around and tell us we are wrong about their work.

Once they are dead, we can confidently talk about the work on a level playing field.

We can interpret mckenna in whatever way we want now, whereas, if he was still alive, he would be the one (or at least highest) authority regarding the meaning of his own words.

it's very apparent with popular culture.

Ex. When Ray Charles died, no one I knew gave a shit about him before he was dead. But immediately after "OMG OMG OMG OMG"

It seems they only care when it's too late

You must have very young friends.  I was well aware of Ray Charles' work by that time.  However, I didn't get into Nirvana until after Kurt killed himself.

It was just one example that I observed. All you have to do is switch the name of any celebrity.
