Burning Man 2009
    #10092777 - 04/02/09 08:01 AM (15 years, 15 minutes ago)

As the burn grows closer I have been becoming more and more excited about this year. As of right now I will be going alone. Which is frightening, but at the same time I'm excited to make the journey alone. Thinking about my own preparations to be made its looking more and more realistic to make it through the burn alone.

At the burn I am going to volunteer and participate as much as possible, though my camp will be minimalistic.

Have quite a few minor ideas for costumes this year (feel free to share any ideas).
Going to try to find an old white 3 piece suit to wear .
I believe with the theme Evolution there will be many tribal style outfits this year, so I'm gonna stock up on the face paint!

Any fellow burners out there? Are you as excited for Burning Man 09 as I am?

See you at the burn!

Not mine, but pretty much hits the nail on the head:

SUNDAY: GO TO BURNING MAN AT HOME
>
> Aw crap! Its the end of the week and you forgot to do all that stuff you circled in your what/where/when. You got all distracted by some blinky lights and just plain forgot what you were supposed to be doing. Well, not to worry. Here is a tutorial on how you can easily experience Burning Man in the comfort of your very own home.
>
>
> Stack all your fans in one corner of your living room. Put on your most fabulous outfit. Turn the fans on full blast. Dump a vacuum cleaner bag in front of them.
>
> Get so drunk you can't recognize your own house. Walk slowly around the block for five hours.
>
> Pitch your tent next to a wall of speakers in a crowded, noisy nightclub. Go to sleep.
>
> Read "Dhalgren" by Samuel R. Delany. Read "The City Not Long After" by Pat Murphy. Cut off the bindings, throw all the pages up in the air, and shuffle them back together. Reread "The Long City Not After Dhalgren" by Samuel Murphy. Burn it. Read the ashes.
>
> Buy a new set of expensive camping gear. Break it.
>
> Pay an escort to not bathe for five days, then cover themselves in glitter, dust, and sunscreen, wear a skanky neon wig, dance close naked, then say they have a lover back home.
>
> Sprinkle sand in your food.
>
> Tear down your house. Put it in a truck. Drive 10 hours in any direction. Put the house back together. Invite everyone you meet to come over and party. When everyone leaves, follow them back to their homes, drink all their booze, and break things.
>
> Lean back in a chair until that point where you're just about to fall over, but you catch yourself at the last moment. Hold that position for 9 hours.
>
> Only use the toilet in a house that is at least 3 blocks away. Drain all the water from the toilet. Only flush it every 4 days. Hide all the toilet paper.
>
> Visit a restaurant and pay them to let you alternate lying in the walk-in freezer and sitting in the oven.
>
> Don't sleep for 5 days. Take a wide variety of mind-altering substances. Pick a fight with your boyfriend/girlfriend.
>
> Cut, burn, electrocute, bruise, and sunburn various parts of your body. Forget how you did it. Don't go to a doctor.
>
> Buy a new pair of favorite shoes. Throw one shoe away.
>
> Spend a whole year rummaging through thrift stores for the perfect, most outrageous costume. Forget to pack it.
>
> Set up a DJ system downwind of a three alarm fire. Play a short loop of drum-n-bass until the embers are cold.
>
> Mail $200 to the Reno casino of your choice.
>
> Go to a museum. Find one of Salvador Dali's more disturbing but beautiful paintings. Climb inside it.
>
> Spend thousands of dollars on a deeply personal art work. Hide it in a funhouse on the edge of the city. Blow it up.
>
> Have a 3 a.m. soul-baring conversation with a drag nun in platforms, a crocodile, and Bugs Bunny. Be unable to tell if you're hallucinating. Lust after Bugs Bunny.
>
> Listen to music you hate for 168 hours straight, or until you think you are going to scream. Scream. Realize you'll love the music for the rest of your life.

I will be doing everything in my power to get there this year. Im in school until August 14th - so burningman will be my summer vacation condensed.

I am trying to volunteer with the DPW + ill get a free ticket and food and stuff for 2/3 weeks volunteer work.

I want to volunteer in hopes to meeting cool people from far away places and learning new skills. Somebodies gotta do it, right? Im totally down for helping... It will be a perverse form of fun.

I figure its 1500kms each way, and beyond gas i wont have many expenses. So im going to save $1000 of my student loan and hope for the best... Cant go wrong with a road trip down the Oregon coast.

MerryIguana - have you been before?

I think that is a strech, it really is hotter than hell on the playa. and its is mad uninhabitable, sandstorms and rain, and your tent getting blown away if you suck at setting it up . PDU you are going to have a blast and meet mad people and learn alot about yourself and others regardless of whether you volunteer  or not. It is alot of fun though.

yeah i went for 2008 with a pair of burners from 2007 who probably won't make it this year.

definitely awesome.
i know for a fact that in order to be a Black Rock Ranger you have to have been a burner before. its like the police force of black rock city (aka burning man).

the  cool thing about it is that the police are burners. the more black rock rangers there are the less actual police they need.

out of 49,599 people (who bought tickets, some people sneak in) there was only something like 136 arrests last year. most of which were violence related. you know people get rowdy when they're drunk
