Spent a week in Cuba

Not very many Americans get to go to Cuba, but i felt like i needed to be there once in my life. The feeling i got during my week was like falling in love. Every night i slept on the beach. I met awesome people, I saw amazing things, and pretty much felt like i was living in a post card.
What i saw is really to much to write. It blew me away to see the poverty, communism, how vibrant the people are there, how safe it is, how happy i was to be there etc.
If anyone has any questions or comments go ahead. Heres some pictures, although many of them are still stuck outside the US till i can figure out a safe way to get all my stuff i got there into this country.
enjoy

My step pops went to visit relatives in Cuba not too long ago. He said he won't go back anytime soon. He said it's so horrible. They do have nice beaches because of local but the poverty was just too much. he said it was nothing but flies everywhere and the roads full of cracks and potholes. He grew up in Cuba. And you know it's bad when you say that about the place you grew up in.
On a side note it's not hard at all to get your things back here. My step dad came with a bunch of seeds that are native over there that are not found here. Including one that's suppose to be some plant that gives out a very sour fruit. Some of these seeds were the size of s silver dollar.

The regulations require that persons subject to U.S. jurisdiction be licensed in order to engage in any travel-related transactions pursuant to travel to, from, and within Cuba. Transactions related to tourist travel are not licensable. This restriction includes tourist travel to Cuba from or through a third country such as Mexico or Canada. U.S. law enforcement authorities have increased enforcement of these regulations at U.S. airports and pre-clearance facilities in third countries.http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1097.html . The American government has essentially limited sanctioned travel to journalists, academics, government officials, those with immediate family members living on the island and others licensed by the Treasury Department.

Yes, in theory.
In practice you can fly to any neutral country, walk to the next terminal over, and fly to Cuba with no problem whatsoever.
You certainly aren't going to be interrogated or arrested upon your return to the US.

can't wait for castro to die and america to take it over and turn it into a huge, shitty beach resort already with another half of the island as a giant prison

cuba isn't really communist in any meaningful sense.
that said, i'd love to go some time. a friend i used to go to school with is from there, and lives there now, so i think i could get some sense of cuba as it is for cubans.

Only in that no country is really "communist". They are, however, socialist as they've always been. The entire economy is managed from Havana, the press is non-existent, capitalist enterprise is extremely limited and only recently legalized, etc.

a centralized govt controlled command economy is not communist. doesn't matter how many times the west says it, it isn't true.
and yes, if we're actually using terms correctly, no country has ever been really communist (closest in modern history were probably some parts of spain during the spanish civil war). that doesn't mean we should throw out the term or dilute what it means.

where to start.
I think ill answer the food question with the communist comment. The food was below par almost everywhere we went, but we got used to it. I ate alot of fruit and vegtables, however wherever we ate fish/lobster/shrimp it was the best ive had anywhere.
They are one of the only remaining countries really trying to be communist. There is a capitalist system in place for tourists to buy things, catch cab's, eat etc.. However the outsiders are forced to use a DIFFERENT CURRENCY. Thats right, Cuba has a dual monetary system. Its important to understand if you visit. Most of the "capitalist" things that go on there happen with the convertible peso, not the currency used by the locals.
Its hugely communist. There are party members everywhere in full Stalin garb. There is no mcdonalds, starbucks, etc.. (which was awesome!) There is no internet apart from state run websites. There is propaganda on billboards along the road.(see above) No products need to be advertised because the state makes everything (since they own all the companies.)
case example:
In Capitalism we have aqua fina, disani, ice mountain and ten other bottle water companies. In Cuba there is no need for competition between two companies with the same owner (the state) therefore there is only one brand of bottled water.
its a different world there.
