When making a print does the cap that you take need to be fully dried or does it need to be fresh??? Also if normal steps are taken is this step easy or hard to contam. Normal steps is sterilize instrustments with flame/lysol/bleach water solution for surfaces and minimize drafts.

can one make a print out of a mushroom off a partially contaminated cake? or does contamination just stunt all growth?

yea but wouldn't a wet cap be a harborer for contaminants esp if sitting in a jar or an enclosed air space for a few days?

All you do is put the fresh cap on some tinfoil or your choice of backing, and leave it for 12 hours while covered. Then remove the cap. Easy. But be clean

a fresh cap is better, preferably one whose veil hasnt been torn for very long. stamets's the mushroom cultivator suggests taking a mushroom whose viel is not torn yet, in effect its gills have been preserved in a semi sterile compartment. you dont need to leave it for more 12 hours or a day, you will still get millions of spores. and in twelve hours there is not much chance the cap will get moldy especially if you practiced sterile technique. just make sure to remove the cap afterward and leave to print to dry in its sterile enviroment before storing it. more important is getting a print that is only shroom spores and not contam spores.
