Diet and Thought
    #10031071 - 03/24/09 03:50 AM (15 years, 27 days ago)

An important question in most traditions of thought: How should one eat to think well and keep a clear mind?

In my experience, eating well is an absolutely critical component of clear thinking. No matter how smart you really are, if you don't feed yourself right, you're gonna think and act stupid. I think it's very telling that a country as well-fed as the USA still manages not to feed its brain.

I've been struggling to maintain a proper diet ever since I realized that eating right allowed my brain to function properly. For me, as someone with a nuclear-powered metabolism, who can live on a fast-food diet without ever going past 150 pounds, it's been very difficult to fully adopt the idea that these easy foods are deleterious to the proper operation of my brain.

Hard-boiled eggs are a good start.

Do not overeat.  Do not eat refined foods.  Grow your own whenever possible.  This year I'm supplementing my organic garden with algae to boost the iodine levels.

Don't eat at McDonalds.

"If you're happy you can digest a stone"

I remember reading this in a great book written by some old country doctor.

Most likely eating most of your food raw would promote the best health. This may include meat, fish and eggs.

Hard to just describe a philosophy of diet; but I think that by describing the particulars, you can sort of paint a general picture.

- Balsamic vinegar is nothing short of miraculous as a food topping.
- Stevia too is really useful, especially for vegetarians who eat alot of fruit, and can expect to be getting a lot of sugar that way.
- I have always loved oatmeal. Throw some wheat germ and flax on it, it tastes even better.
- make my own multigrain breads.
- grow vegetables and herbs.
- Convenience can go a long way, and this is how I get my raw foods. (a certain kind of laziness)
- I really love tea and herbology but this I could only describe as far as my faith in it goes.
- Also I take a large cup of spirulina after I exercise, though I can't really pinpoint how this makes me feel either.
- Generally you've gotta have faith in your body, and the foods you eat.

I have found that when I eat can really mess up my general discipline. This is seeming like a bigger and bigger deal as I further define my diet. How full your stomach is can really effect the way you think. No matter how strongly I believe "mind over matter", just the opposite seems to be true much of the time. Having a somewhat strict routine sometimes, I have noticed that if I listen to my stomach first, everything goes out the window (especially if pot is involved). Can never expect to have good yoga or meditation after a munchie binge, even if it is on healthy foods. It just seems to be better on a relatively empty stomach. Reading is better when I am full.

As far as explicit philosophy goes, in general for the last few years I have learned a lot through ascetic practice. I don't think you can know a middle path, particularly with the body, until you understand the margins of your experience. So thats a general idea, and I think it describes my philosophy pretty well. Obviously in a diet philosophy how you treat/discipline the body is very personal.

i've been thinking about this a lot recently.

i consume way too much food, and most of it not too healthy. I'm at 177lbs....should be around 145-150.

i need to start eating more fish and green stuff.

This sounds familiar. I have a raging metabolism and can't stop being hungry, which makes me want to eat as much fat and carbs as possible because they are actually filling. It's a stupid cycle that I'm trying to change. In part, because I am goddamn tired of being foggy headed and out of it.

I think shelled hemp seeds are my new wonder food. I've been having 3 TBSP with granola, yogurt, ground flax and banana in the morning and so far it seems to tide me over alot longer than the same meal without the hempseeds.

Stinky Munster cheese spread on Wasa bread, sprouted hemp-seeds, sourdough bread,
potato and leek soup, plums, carrots and salmon are the prolegomena of my thought this week.

Internet's no good for me if I'm not relaxed about it.
Reading early in the morn's not mountain climbing, but there's a lot of ascension, vistas and lightning..when you get up there.

Fluids. I like tea, beer, wine.... Pure water's good. I know of an island not far from here that has the best water. One should only drink water from where the gods are.

One thing, has your meal caused any being suffering?

Vegetarianism inescapably clears the mind, but it can't be prooven you can only try it yourself

I tried it for several years and didn't notice that. Now I'm raw vegan for the most part. Maybe that will work.

Depends how far in the causal chain you want to go.

Vegetarianism fails to give the brain the fat it needs and aggravates the blood cells. Thus we see the repeatedly stupid positions held by vegetarians and their often irascible sentiments.

bradley, that's something you've tried?

Ultimately i'd say theres only one thing that can truly purify the mind, devotion to the absolute, but food can help though...

Do you think cooked food is really bad? Like cooked pasta & brocoli etc?

I make lots of raw fruit/green smoothies & raw salads, snack on nuts, but i still have a cooked meal for my dinner everyday, without that cooked meal i don't kow what id eat & i reckon id be seriously low on energy levels

I heard cooked tomatoes are better than raw as it activates the lycopene?

Problem with the meat is you need a reliable source--hunting, know a hunter, know an organic farmer....
